Change of Plans

Post by DrXThirst »

Ok, so my last setup didn't satisfy me, so here's what I've come up with.

Processor: Intel Core i7-940 (2.93ghz, 8MB L2 Cache) -- Basically a quad-core with redesigned Hyper Threading (Which was already f.cking insane.)

RAM: 6GB Tri-Channel DDR3, 1066mhz - 6 DIMMs

Video Card: 512mb ATI Radeon HD 4850

Now, I know that the processor and RAM are good, but I'm still unassured with the Video Card. Will it run Halo 2 Vista SMOOTHLY? That's all I'm concerned with. I'm not sure what resolution... I'm hoping for 1680x1050 with at least 30FPS, but I'll go for a lower resolution than that.

Here's information:
http://ati.amd.com/products/Radeonhd4800/index.html

Also, here's a picture of what I'm getting, and the price: [Click Here]

Why do you need 6gbs of RAM? Just curious.

Also Halo 2 Vista will run perfectly, but if you have that processor and that much RAM you might as well go for a 1gb card.

For all of the applications that I run at once, especially the ones that require lots of memory. I don't stop to run one application at a time, I just run lots and lots of stuff all at once, and I'll probably be running lots of things at once while running H2V, so I'll need it. Also, I'm building this one with DELL as well, so that was the minimum amount of RAM that I could choose.

The graphics card that I chose was the best one I could chose.

I'm running four 4850's in Crossfire, and they tear through anything, but hey, that's 4.
I personally love 4850's their the best bang for buck you can get.

Just know that 32 bit OSes can only use 3.2 GB of RAM.

I thought that they could potentially use that much?

64 bit OS? Or just a 64 bit processor? You need both.

With a 32-Bit OS you are able to use up to 4 gigs of SHARED memory, that means if you have a graphics processor with 512MB onboard RAM it will basically subtract 512MB from your 4 gigs so you end up with only being allowed to use 3.5 gigs of system RAM and your 0.5 gigs of video RAM because only 4 gigs is addressable with 32 Bits.

School's machines have that processor. Without any extra crap to worry about they are about as slow as molasses in an igloo.

I really doubt that, as these were just released... :|

Meh, I can tear through both Crysis Warhead and Far Cry 2 with settings the following:

1680x1050 Ressolution (my max res)
16X AA and AF
Ultra High across the board for Far Cry 2 and Very High for Crysis.

Far Cry 2: 140 FPS
Crysis Warhead: 85 FPS

Could be higher but my CPU is holding me back.

CNET just reviewed their first PC that can run Crysis on max settings w/o dropping below 30fps.
Falcon Northwest built it.
