Our school computers are the same. There's more security than necessary. I can't actually do my ICT coursework properly because some of my programs don't work well. Most of the time when you log on to the school network, no programs are in the start menu. Lol, wtf?

Strange, my school's computers only block certain sites, launching any exe from the user area/memory stick, and launching .bat files or command prompt.
Also, are you doing the DiDA course?

Same here, but our video production class has macs and they're monitored by the Video Production teacher who doesn't care about anything so we're basically allowed to put anything that will work on the mac.
