Sarah Palin's 17-Year-Old Daughter is Pregnant

Post by RaVNzCRoFT »

I don't have enough time to write a book about this right now, but I assure you I have plenty to say. The news has just been surfacing in the last few hours. Bristol Palin, the daughter of Sen. John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin, is five months pregnant.

We won't hesitate to lock this, so keep discussions on-topic and purposeful. Let's have a civilized thread, please.

Discuss.

I'm not sure why this would hold any significance to anything. I'm interested in seeing what you could have to say about this.

The only thing I can possibly think to say about this is something like
"Oh, what a terrible parent she must be; how Christian of them" or other comments of that sort. It would just be dumb. Does this show anything about the abilities of a potential vice president? No, not really.

I think some people may look at as being immoral. It is, but your are right that doesn't reflect anything on Palin ( Unless she didn't care, which I highly doubt. ). I think people are going to "Over analyze" it, and try to make a big deal out of it, just to hurt McCain.

It's not necessarily saying anything about the abilities of a potential vice president, but I think it's extremely hypocritical on the part of the entire family. I think the fact that this would happen in a family that preaches abstinence among unwed couples could seriously hurt McCain's chance of winning the election.
While I think that Bristol Palin's pregnancy ought to be a private issue, I am concerned with the McCain campaign's statement, especially this, from the CNN story:

"The McCain aide insisted a key point to keep in mind is that Bristol decided to keep the baby, a decision "supported by her parents.""

And yet John McCain doesn't want women like Bristol Palin to have the ability to make that decision. This campaign cannot be allowed to make political hay out of a young woman making a choice when they don't believe she should have that choice.
Also, I believe Palin is in no position to be running for vice president, as she has 5 children of her own, one of them being an infant with Down Syndrome.

I really think this is a incredibly minimal issue in the campaign, even for myself, someone who despises McCain.

Who knows the daughter may not agree with what they believe. I don't think some people are going to look at whats going on and just look at the overall fact that shes pregnant. Not implying that EVEYONE is not thinking.

I don't see the issue at all.

As the result of a teenage pregnancy, I'm slightly offended this has even been brought up as a potential issue.

Are people forgetting the fact that she is pregnant with a human being. People should be happy for her, the baby doesn't deserve to grow up thinking it could have had a detrimental effect on someones career.

She's 17. Not 14. I fail to see why it's a big deal.

Meh. I view it the same way that I view the whole business with Jeremiah Wright. The outside people are not the candidates. Good for them, they don't have a bearing on my opinion of them.

This could go either way... One way to look at it would be, she cant control her own daughter do we really want her helping control our country? The other way to look at it is, how does that reflect the candidate?

I share this sentiment that Obama just put out:

"Let me be as clear as possible," Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."

The "she can't control her daughter so she can't control the country" thing is completely ridiculous too. I can't even give you a reasonable counter-point to that, because it's so out there that I can't even fathom the thought process that goes into it, and therefore cannot analyze said thought process reasonably. I really hope nobody is shallow enough to actually think that that is a legitimate idea. It's just like this propaganda point that someone would use as dumb, well, propaganda attack. The equivalent to that would be saying "Why isn't the president out there stopping robberies?" They put laws into the government, or fundamentals/beliefs/morals into their family, but people within those groups still disobey them. Do you expect her, as a parent, to walk around monitoring her 17 year old daughter all of the time? Do you expect any parent to do that? There is so much more to who someone is than what their parents want them to be, and to say that the daughter's decisions reflect the mother in any way is completely absurd.

I'm willing to bet the people putting out this absurd propaganda are the same ones that would say John McCain is just going about with his "politics as usual," making them hypocrites. You know who won't be saying this insane stuff? McCain supporters. That pretty much leaves Obama supporters/undecided/third party supporters, all of whom would, I'm sure, say that these cheap political tactics we've all seen for some long are ruining the political process. As an Obama supporter and Liberal voter, I find it despicable that people are using this to reflect negatively on Palin or McCain.

I really respect Obama for that kind of sentiment. Not only does he fan the flames but he defends the poor Palin family.

Agreed i am a whole hearted Republican but i can see as well as most people that Obama is an honest and fair man. But never the less i know the press will try to turn this on McCain. It's basically what the press does to everything.

What is there to discuss?

As a republican, who supports Mccain, I dont see what the problem is with this? This should not hurt his chance of getting the presidency.

It shouldn't have to. But lately, personal attacks have been the cool thing to do in political campaigns, and it's sad that this has to be one of those.
