a thread locked

Post by AbeFroman »

about the thread description, that is not the reason Tural gave for locking it but his reason didn't seem to apply,

this is the thread in question
Tural wrote: This really isn't what the pictures board is for, and it would be welcomed if you stopped making these nonsensical threads. Just because the board description doesn't say you can't post these no-discussion, spam threads, doesn't mean you can. If it would be considered spam in any other board, which it would, it's going to be considered spam here. Keep pictures in the Pictures board relevant to the types of threads that have always existed here.
it would not be considered spam in the pictures thread...
rules thread wrote:6) Pictures should stay HALO based, please do not post pictures that are not relevant.

7) Clearly fake pictures, such as fake covers of games, are pointless and misleading, and will lead to the thread being locked. If you have made a cover that you would like to display, it goes in the Graphics section. Otherwise, no fake images such as those.
it is indeed HALO based, it is not fake, only text added

yet it has been locked, i did notice that i forgot to put Misc: before it and the rules say i should, could that be why it is locked?

Tural, im sorry but your reason doesn't quite make sense, it follows the pictures section rules just fine, the only "controversy" it may have been sparking was

I agree. I think there should be more threads like the one in question, which appeal to younger Halo users.

I disagree. As Tural said, it doesn't promote discussion in any way. That, in my books, is spam.

Besides, they're not in the slightest way amusing. What's the point in them?

My point is that I'm young, and I find them amusing. I wouldn't call it spam, because people can discuss how the screenshots were made, and how they can be improved, just like any other pictures thread. Saying 'What's the point in them?', is a bit like like saying ''What's the point in modding?'. Just because there is no real reason, it doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

Rules are rules. It is spam, and therefore was removed with good reason.

it was supposed to promote discussion along the lines of "lol thats funny"
but i guess not everyone quite got it

and Lolcats is an acquired taste you have to grow up with them to find them funny

Did I ever say that, at all? I gave the reason why it was locked, I wouldn't lock a topic for a reason and then give another. That wouldn't make any sense. It was locked because it is pointless and it is spam, exactly like I said.
AbeFroman wrote:Tural, im sorry but your reason doesn't quite make sense, it follows the pictures section rules just fine, the only "controversy" it may have been sparking was

Yes, it does make sense. And, as I said, just because it isn't explicitly forbidden doesn't mean it's allowed. The topic was spam. There would be no dumb "lolcats" (And, as a few people would agree, it's really annoying to continue seeing this when you know the people propagating it are nfs) in the Cafe board, even if it was promoting discussion of "lol that's funny." (Which, by the way, is not legitimate discussion.)
Philly wrote:I wouldn't call it spam, because people can discuss how the screenshots were made, and how they can be improved, just like any other pictures thread.
Was that being done? No, not at all. People were just posting more images, it was a pointless 'post pointless images" topic, not a discussion topic.
Philly wrote:Saying 'What's the point in them?', is a bit like like saying ''What's the point in modding?'.
The situations are not the same, and you attempt to apply the specific logic to a global situation is unnecessary.
AbeFroman wrote:and Lolcats is an acquired taste you have to grow up with them to find them funny
You don't even know the origin, and if you did, you wouldn't be making the thread because of what it would prove you are.

The decision stands.

Why the hell do you people keep saying that? Who are you to judge what is and what is not amusing? Who are you to judge what promotes discussion and what doesn't?

It's not your job to decide what's funny and what isn't.

That thread could have as much discussion as any other, and I sure would've contributed my own pictures if it hadn't been locked.
Tural wrote:People were just posting more images, it was a pointless 'post pointless images" topic, not a discussion topic.
Yeah, you totally gave people enough time to do so. A couple /facepalms(which really, how does that contribute to the forum at all?), and some people posted pictures. DemonicSandwich linked to a picture he saw as amusing(does that tell you something, IGeo?), and that picture could've been discussed. "What map? How'd you get the pose?" etc. You hardly gave people enough time to say anything before you locked it.
God forbid we have a topic in the Pictures section that could make people laugh. A topic that would lighten the mood of this near-dictatorship HaloMods now seems to have.

I agree with Amaan, Halomods is getting very stirct and uptight. I mean there are pointless topics every where, god forbid if we have an official one. Maybe its not amussing to you, but maybe it is for some people.

I can judge for myself what is and isn't funny. I wasn't judging for anyone else. I was contributing my opinion, that they are not in the slightest bit amusing.
Aumaan Anubis wrote:Who are you to judge what promotes discussion and what doesn't?
A staff member. That's who I am. Judging what does and doesn't promote discussion is what I'm supposed to do. Judging what is and what isn't spam is also something that I'm supposed to do.
Aumaan Anubis wrote:It's not your job to decide what's funny and what isn't.
Tural locked it, not me. Tural didn't lock it because he didn't find it funny. If I had locked it, it wouldn't have been because I don't find it funny.
Aumaan Anubis wrote:...and that picture could've been discussed. "What map? How'd you get the pose?" etc.
Interesting discussion that would have been.

So I see we get complaints if we lock a spam thread, but we get complaints if we don't lock spam threads. If we lock it, we're dictators, if we don't, we're letting Halomods become cluttered and unorganized. The thread was as much spam as it would be anywhere else on the site. Refer to my comment about such a thread in Cafe. Would it fit in Cafe? Yes. Would that make it a legitimate topic? No.
It had a chance at discussion, it had about 100 views over the day it was there, and the only comments posted were not promoting discussion and the only images posted did nothing to spur any further discussion.

I'm not unlocking that thread. It would be considered spam if it was anywhere else on the site, and the pictures board does not give it legitimacy. You have several staff members (I count 4, at the moment) all giving the same response (And none supporting the thread), that the topic was illegitimate. Who are they to decide? They're the staff, that's who. The staff is given the ability to make judgments about topics and whatnot, that is why they are staff.

wow, everyone get over the fact that a thread was locked. That just means next time either post it in a thread that is relevant such as happiness or rant, in this case Halo pics maybe, and get over the fact your thread was locked.

Every time someone's thread is locked there's plenty of harassment via PMs or a post in this board. What fun would it be if everyone wasn't so rebellious? Nevermind the fact that by posting here, people agree to abide by the rules, which also say staff members have judgment over a situation, even if it is not explicitly defined, and even with an admin saying the same, that's all irrelevant, yeah. Fight the man!

Post it, then.

Do you know how many topics have been locked based on staff judgment, and not some direct rule being broken, in the pictures board over the last year? One, this one. The pictures board is a very relaxed moderation board, but as soon as anyone does anything, everyone's flipping out. It's one topic, as bcnipod pointed out, just move on. It's really not worth all this arguing. Find a way to make the topic legitimate and it's free to be posted, but a random 'post pictures' thread does not constitute that.

It was Deadhamster's one, a few topics down from this. It wasn't exactly the same scenario, but you can see from reading my comments that I felt the same way about it.

Not to act like an ass here but I think this discussion is really pointless. The locking of a thread is not something to be taken personally. What is a thread? +5k of text on a server somewhere. It is not your dog, stop acting like someone shot your dog and danced on it in your face. Accept that sometime topics don't attract attention, and are not seen as useful. Just get over that fact that the +5k of text you had on the server was locked to it is read only.
