Sorry for the bump, I know this is old. I have a few questions. I used Max to do this tutorial, but I found it hard to follow, since I'm more of a Cinema 4D person. I would love to have a C4D tutorial that will give me similar if not better results than Max will. I have been playing around with the model and while I can't get him to look amazing, I can get him to look better than in-game. Here are a few screenshots of my C4D results with my latest...techniques:
Hi-Res
Hi-Res
In order from oldest to newest. I'm using various different methods, but mainly going by eye. My idea is that if it looks exactly like in-game, then it's not in any way my work, so I change it around.
What I really need, though, is a way to get or make a high resolution texture map, at least 1024x1024, preferably twice that though. If I want one of these am I going to have to make it myself because if I do, then I'm doomed. The only way I know of making the texture bigger is scaling it up in Photoshop, I don't know how to improve the quality other than sharpening. What can I do to make an amazing quality texture map?
And back to the original question, is anyone willing to make a tutorial for this using C4D? I'd be really grateful, I learned a lot from this, but the tools aren't the same in C4D.
Thank you.

The program is not the issue, it is the user. Have a look here, for instance:HaLo2FrEeEk wrote:I would love to have a C4D tutorial that will give me similar if not better results than Max will.

3ds max is more than sufficient for any needs, you just need to learn how to use it, which is what this tutorial begins teaching.
And again, texture size will not help you at all if you can't design the shader. Shaders, not bitmaps, are what make the materials look good.

See the thing is, I just don't know how to use Max. I tried last year when I was still in school and I couldn't make heads or tails from anything. Like I said, I'm going off of look, mostly, but I'm using real in-game colors and specular. I'm trying to keep it close to in-game, but make it look better. I'm using Halo 2 Map Editor's H2Guerilla to open the shader file for masterchief and I just don't get it. It's my opinion that C4D isn't better or worse than Max, I've seen incredible work from both (in fact, C4D was used with RealFlow in the feature film Sweeney Todd, to create the blood in the opening sequence). Still though, I'm used the C4D interface and I'm getting a lot better at using the built-in scripting engine and toolset. I would like to continue using C4D, I just need to know how to achieve a Max effect C4D, using different tools.
And those threads you reffered me to, are those extracted models from Halo 3? If so where did they come from, I can't find anything on Yayap about them.

I know everything you stated in the first paragraph that was relevant, which was about one sentence. Your first post stated that C4D could yield better results than Max could, I showed you that you can achieve the same thing with either program. It is not the program, it is the user. Your first post said otherwise.
The models were extracted from the beta using private tools that only a few of us had access to. You cannot acquire them as of now.

GOT IT!
Ok, I figured out what I was doing wrong, still in need of the cubemaps, but here's what I got!
