Alright, so. I assembled together a computer (Asus P5L-VM 1394, Intel Core 2 Duo [can't remember model right now], and that's basically the major components of it that are new).
First try with the motherboard, the integrated video didn't work. I sent it back to Newegg and got a new one: it still doesn't work. Today I looked at it, fired it up, and the hard drive didn't start. I plugged the IDE cable in going the other way, and it worked fine. Also, at the same time, I noticed something that probably didn't help. I took off the heatsink and fan from the CPU (whoever designed the locking mechanism on those needs to die), and I saw that none of the thermal paste was burned or even melted. I looked at the CPU, and d'oh, it wasn't aligned right. It was 90 degrees off. I put it back in, and it started heating up (good, I assume, as it's working), and the hard drive spun up. But still, no video.
Anyone have any suggestions on things to check? I unplugged everything and went from nothing, and tried three sticks of RAM, but still, no video signal.

I'm pretty sure you already mentioned that you were, but remember to stay grounded the entire time, to prevent the chance of ruining a part.

Have you tried a different video card? You could narrow down the issue if you could buy another cheap one, or even borrow one from a friend. You could figure out where the problem lies, in the Video Card, or in the motherboard, etc.

The parts also just may not be compatable with each other.

I've only built one computer, and that was with some major help, so that's unfortunately the only information/advice I can provide. Hope it all works out.

Every part is compatible. The RAM is the same kind I had in the computer that is mine, and it's the same motherboard. It's a compatible processor. It's integrated video, so there's nothing there to be worried about with compatibility. I'm just wondering aloud, maybe someone else can bring something up that I haven't thought of.
And yes, I was grounded.

I see about 5 errors you made...and that in a single post.

1.CPU can die in about 10 secs if you remove heat sink. Because the sudden heat (even if it's not mouch) it can shock the whole processor.

2. After you remove the heatsink you have to reaply thermal paste since the airbubbles that you created by removing it don't transfer the heat that well causing the CPU to fail.

3.Grounded yourself?

4.CPU 90 degress...I don't know how you pulled that off but that's deadly already.

The video thing...I had the problem too but trust me...GPUs,CPUs are the last thing that die on you. Either you cracked your Mboard again or your PSU is simply just to weak.

Possible you haven't aligned the jumpers correctly.
most motherboards ive seen with that problem is when the CMOS jumper is set on reset bios not the normal position.

1. I didn't run it with the heatsink off, I put it on after taking it off the first time.

3. Every single time.
4. Yeah...I just don't know if it being misaligned would kill it from the beginning, or if it would just refuse to work (that's what seemed to happen).

Jumpers are all standard, just like they are on the motherboard I'm using now. But I'll double check it just to be sure.
