linux vs. windows

So thats why I've got a BSOD twice already D:. With a brand new computer...

ya ive decided to build my own computer with only the best of parts and ive decided on ubuntu mainly for visual effects and stuff and i looked at the apps that wine supports and i find i really dont need anything else and everytime i mod something software related it tends to be more of a graphics mod so linux being the most visually customizable ive decided to go with that also ive decided to put it on my 360 so booyah

If you are serious with an ubuntu only computer then you wouldn't need to make it that powerful (say, compared to an excellent vista computer).

Ubuntu doesn't take up that much processing, either coz its so small, doesn't do as much as windows and doesn't require it or coz its just orsm. Either way, my vista laptop owned it and could do everything with it and all I'd get is a bit of fan spinup.

I'm saying if you've got you're heat spent on ubuntu only computer, it means you won't have to spend as much money on hardware (and software)

What kind of computer did you buy? I've had this happen to friends, they bought HP's and they where terrible, vista ran slow, and crashed a lot. Other brands, like gateways or dells have no problem at allEDIT: For people wanting to try linux but not lose windows, or mess with dual bootin try this

It installs ubuntu onto virtual disks, so you can have both OS's but no partitioning, and if you don't like linux you simply uninstall it.

Now, talking about compiz, If setup properly, It can be used to increase productivity and desktop organization very well. This was my experience when using Beryl. (haven't been able to touch a linux box physically for about 6 months now, been in Paraguay

) Once I had it tweaked the effects became complimentary and not the focus.

From my experience, the more ram linux has, the more happy it is, sure I can run it on my router with 16mb of ram, My laptop had 512 when I first started playing around with linux, (3 years ago) and as time went on, I popped in a gigstick for 1.25 GB, and it ran even better. (amarok is a bitch sometimes with a huge collection, 20+GB)

Define small, the base install is small, but as you add more cruft, it can get decently large,

We've been working on a lot of new things recently to improve productivity, as well as facilitate new requests.

Ubuntu does tend to be small, even when you do add gobs of stuff on it, because it's still only things you want. There are other options, Sabayon has undoubtedly the best live CD...
