linux vs. windows

I've only got a 2.44 dual-core with 1 gig of RAM, and Vista Business Edition runs like a beast with the graphics cranked up and Glass2k on top of that (for making windows slightly transparent with a fully transparent title bar).

The BIG difference is the processor. I'm running AMD. Intel can't handle Vista too well.

Okay, so, about the topic...
It depends on what you're doing. If you're a gamer, I'd go with XP Professional. If you're a well-rounded guy, go with Vista (Home Basic sucks and Ultimate's a waste of money). If you just use it for the internet and small stuff, it doesn't really matter much, but I'd familiarize myself with Wine if I were you (Windows emulator for Linux).

Best bet is to install Virtual PC 2007 (It's free from Microsoft) and run a virtual machine of Ubuntu to see if you like it or not. Just to let you know, Ubuntu tends to run slowly in a virtual machine, but it's worth the shot.

Whilst I don't understand how you believe windows isn't customisable, I'd say go with linux/ubuntu only if your a casual computer user...EG: You do word documents, browse internet, emails, play poorly made games, like prettiness and like it all fast. But if you want intensive things like games and big apps like photoshop flash then you probably will find yourself going back

I'd like to disagree, linux can and is used for more than that. This site, runs linux :p. Your router, guess what?, runs linux. Have you checked the App Database at WineHQ? The number of supported apps grows each day.

Halo works in Wine too, but it takes a lot of tinkering (I still get error messages saying it can't find the shader files >_>)

Photoshop works better under Wine that it has ever worked for me in Windows, but that's probably just me.

Heh, I saw a guy on YouTube playing Halo 2 Vista on high settings with Anti-Aliasing, with the same exact computer I have, excluding his video card... So, I bet my processor will run Vista well. I tried Linux once, and didn't like it. So here I am, still with windows..

He may have replaced all of the internals in it.

I would go with windows XP, it has the most app support at the time, but you can run linux off a cd so you can test it out and see how you like it. I know ubuntu can boot from a cd so download the iso and burn it to a CD, you can then try it out and if you don't like it just remove the cd and you won't have to use it again.

i think modded WoW servers are legal though, last time i heard my friends chatting about it (a long time ago). that way you ahve your own server you can do whatever you want on, etc.

getting back on topic more, i fixed the issue my laptop had with connecting to the internet, and i've got a ubuntu server i'm trying to get set up. maybe in the future it'll work for me as a web/file server, maybe even a personal proxy, or really whatever else i can think up.

which brings up the point of how linux beats windows into the ground when considering a server environment. it's not as focused on by crackers, so you don't have to worry nearly as much about 0-day exploits or viruses than if you were running a windows box. also, you have more freedom in what services you want running in linux than in windows. with my experience, windows always has at least 5 open ports because of various services the OS is running. With linux, there are distros that have no open ports by default unless you install services on them, so they're more secure in that manner while also saving processor cycles from services you never use.

I'd really like to see their reasoning on that.

It's almost the same thing as playing Xbox Live without paying. You're using their software without paying for it.

To stay ontopic, I prefer Windows. Just because I've never tried Linux, and I'm comfortable with Windows.

My desktop used to dual boot Fedora (linux) and windows xp pro. I have 2 macs and I used to have a desktop with Vista, but I put the disk away and uninstalled it. Vista was so so, but I prefer XP. Macs are cool, but irrelevent to this topic. Fedora was cool though. I like the gnome GUI and it did run fast. Plus with fire fox as the default browser and gimp as the equivilant to paint, I really didn't have to download anything. I will say this though: Windows is more widespread and trying to fix a problem or install or download something is easier than with linux.

I have a Ubuntu image running in VPC 07, and it runs quite well. The fact that I'm running it on my laptop (3.4 Ghz processor and 4gig RAM) may make a difference.

I would SERIOUSLY recommend setting up a virtual machine on Windows.

With commercial applications, most of which were created recently, that also would never have a chance in hell of running on my hardware.

Not really recently...There are a few old ones that do this...The coverflow is a mod I've been waiting for on vista =(
Compix is pretty kool, but I find myself playing with it rather than using it properly. I also thank you for not being the typical moron who shows off linux effects...They generally overkill and show how impractical their setup is...

But then again, I only watched a minute and a half...You may have gone onto the stupidity part after that

have a vista computer for 2 months and since we got it froze on everything we opened a program or documents anything turned out the harddrive was faulty and my mate got a vista laptop and took it back next day cause of harddrive fault we got this blue screen error and now we have to use my sisters laptop for everything its a pain in the *** and we have had our computer gone for just about a month:

Correct and believe it or not, ATI also uses drivers which also crash.
