linux vs. windows

my other pc has vista. I dont like it right now because theres lots of problems that need to be patched. XP is the best

My freind got linux to work on his computer (after numerous tries) and it wasn't good at all. I don't think he ever used it again.

I love my ubuntu....But now I find myself never using it...Simply because it dones't suit my needs for apps...It has the beauty and glamorous GUI with all the pretty turned up and fully customisable...But I constantly run into walls on it and want to do things I can't do on there.

I like vista...I use it on my 1gb dual core laptop, and it works fine! I don't know where people are coming from with its "oh so slow" and shit...But I understand Tural's complaint, things like renaming every little thing in Control panel...Its startup time is slower than XP (although I shortened it considerably, thanks to the startup changer, stupid apps like antivirus constantly trying to do things but BAM only a few startup apps now) and its shutdown time is horrendous (I serously cannot even begin to comprehend what its doing, I've closed all the apps beforehand), however I just use sleep which removes both problems. The thing I see with it is that it would be great for completly new computer users...But from people upgrading from any version of windows before it will have a time of confusion...Which is silly, since windows dominates...

Whilst I don't understand how you believe windows isn't customisable, I'd say go with linux/ubuntu only if your a casual computer user...EG: You do word documents, browse internet, emails, play poorly made games, like prettiness and like it all fast. But if you want intensive things like games and big apps like photoshop flash then you probably will find yourself going back

i've got a laptop running backtrack 2 right now, but i'm running into minor walls with not knowing the OS too well and having a crappy laptop, and no supported wifi card. that should be fixed soon though.

i like XP because i'm a big gamer, and i've just used it a long time. but once i sift through all these semi-working components i have lyin' around, i'll get a linux server up and running. i had one up before that i didn't do much with, and it's as easy as getting a spare pc, installing a server ubuntu, then an ssh daemon and going from there. you might need some help doing the first few things, but it's a good way to learn the OS, and when you do you'll have a server you can use!

Vista is my choice of OS, I've been using it for awhile now, and never really had any problems with it. As for Ubuntu I had a bad experience installing it once, so it kinda put me off of it. I'm thinking of giving at another shot though... maybe dual-boot...

I'm actually switching to Vista now that stuff on the way puts me in the ballpark of being able to use it without big issues. I got a Radeon X1650 and another gig of RAM on its way, is it worth Ditching XP and switch to Vista Ultimate?

I got sick of Vista and reformatted my entire hard drive.

And if you think Vista looks cool, you need a reality check.

Many of my friends keep telling me how great Linux is and how I should get it, delete XP, remove my Bill gates Poster and discard my Microsoft bedsheeets, but I never see any of them using it.... ever.

Windows is simple. Windows is clean. Windows contains the most functionality. Is the most supported. Is the choice platform. Windows is the most popular operating system in the world.

Windows vista is clean and easy to use, I use vista on our laptop, and I find it annoying to use any other OS, even XP, Vista is nice to look at, & really easy to use.

What kind of computer did you buy? I've had this happen to friends, they bought HP's and they where terrible, vista ran slow, and crashed a lot. Other brands, like gateways or dells have no problem at all

EDIT: For people wanting to try linux but not lose windows, or mess with dual bootin try this

It installs ubuntu onto virtual disks, so you can have both OS's but no partitioning, and if you don't like linux you simply uninstall it.

The choice all depends on the user. If you really have no money or means to get Microsoft Windows then by all means try Ubuntu, that is if you just want to use it for casual use. Also Linux is good for developers like me, but instead of Ubuntu I would use Debian. It's not necessarily which is better but which would suit your own personal needs best. For me Windows is the OS for me, although I use Ubuntu and Debian every so often. It has more functionality and is easy to use, but Ubuntu is also easy to use. Like I said though, it all depends on the user.

I have an HP and Vista on this hardware is terrible. Terribly slow, freezes continuously, issues with Hibernation and Sleeping, doesnt shut off when you hit shut down, product key issues (still not fixed, had laptop for almost 4 months, cant even use Word), freezes when plugging and unplugging the power cord or multiple USB connections. I like Vista, just not on my laptop. (Business Edition x64)
