By giving a universal definition, you assume that everybody must be like that, creating a stereotype.
So you're saying impossible to define a goth, and that they're all unique?

Yes. I am saying that they are all normal human beings (although some people don't agree), and therfore must all be different and unique.
I'm not a goth, in case you think I'm being one-sided.

There is no umbrella statement that will take in everyone that calls themselves a "goth." There's some that do it because they like the look, some that do it because they want attention, and some that do it because they think it's what represents them best.

That is not what creates a stereotype.
It is how you define someone or something.

But as you said, a Goth cannot be defined.
Therefore a Goth cannot exist.
If there is no authority voice on the subject that can make the decision due to a lack of guidelines, everyone up to the President could technically be considered a Goth, as there is no criteria.

I think I can say, that no matter how corrupt you all think your president is, he's not a goth.

Ok, define the word 'Word'. We all know what a word is, from experience, but can we define it? No.
Just as we all know what a goth is, but it's not good to catergorise people because of the way they look, is it now?

Voluntary association via group is a choice that people make to represent themselves. They know how they are handled, accepted, and all other repercussions to expect to get upon said association.

No, we actually can thanks to standards.
a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning. Words are composed of one or more morphemes and are either the smallest units susceptible of independent use or consist of two or three such units combined under certain linking conditions, as with the loss of primary accent that distinguishes blackʹbirdʹ from blackʹ birdʹ. Words are usually separated by spaces in writing, and are distinguished phonologically, as by accent, in many languages.

People like you make me want to punch you in the face. Don't make jokes/laugh in the face of things just for the sake of not understanding them.
Are you goth yourself, or are around goth people most of the time by any chance?
Not really, but I've known 1 or 2 goths in the past, and they were perfectly friendly people. Plus, people aren't just depressed because they think it might be 'fun'. It happens, I've been depressed before (just recently, when I posted that, as a matter of fact, but that doesn't make me 'emo', it just means I have something really bad going on right now). It comes with being active in your community, and having good friends around you. When something really bad happens to them, or between you and them, it really brings you down.

Goths are accepted as bad people because they look like bad people. They mostly aren't bad people, but they look like it.

If you had a Goth very outgoing, open minded kid, who knows and is good friends with many people, you would be destroying the stereotype of "Goth." Some people dislike the stereotype Goth and anyone who falls under their interpretation of the stereotype will most likely be judged immediately.

First appearances are the key. It is good that you dress "appropriate" around elders and if you were to dress "Goth" around them, you would fall under that universal stereotype.

Many people (including me) do not like the stereotype of the Goth. It seems that we are under the impression that you worship Satan. However, you may or may not. That is not the only reason we dislike the stereotype. I do believe that the stereotype has been built off of television, miscellaneous photos, and maybe past acquaintances. (obviously more) It seems that I don't like Goth cause they give me shivers down my back. The wearing of chains and all black drives me nuts. It brings a sense that you are lonely and uncomfortable. I believe people get that negative feeling toward Goths because of the color you wear. Black.

Here is a wikipedia description.
Black is sometimes used with a negative connotation. Some reasons for this are various, but the most widely accepted explanations are that night is experienced by humans as negative and dangerous.

Black gives shivers down our spine when people wear it with unneeded accessories. If a Goth were to wear yellow, red, normal T-shirt it would eliminate the Goth situation.

Now, you can wear all the chains and stuff but picture yourself as a Goth without dark cloths and with blue jeans/white well fitted Tshirt. You would not be Goth. I strongly believe the only reason Goth is a strongly discouraged lifestyle because of the color black.

BTW, I do say "we" however, I am imagining a world full of my clones

If Goths dressed how they dressed, it wouldn't be such a problem. Unfortunately most of the Goths I see have behaviors that reflect how they dress; loud, annoying, and deliberately craving for attention.

I do not know enough Goths to say they are looking for attention.

I have a friend who wears all black...black leather jacket, black shirt, and black jeans.
He's probably the furthest from a stereotypical goth you could get. He is the unbelievably biggest ladies' man, and he's a fun guy to be around. I don't think his clothing style changes what kind of a person he is, so I just don't understand how you can believe that at all...but, not all people who wear black are like that, so I can see how people get those experiences...from the ones who DO do it for the attention.

Very good point. I too have a friend almost exactly like that.

And there aren't just as many other people who AREN'T goth looking for attention? It's their personality itself, not the fact that they are goth. Saying all goth's are bad and satanic is like saying all black kids are gangsters or all asians love rice.

monteryjak actually made a half-decent point. The thing that separates goth/emo from other labels is what is associated with Goth/amo-ism. Generally speaking, the things that the Gothic labels spawned from are fairly dark, sometimes satanic sources. I don't care if you want to wear some black, a chain or 2, hell maybe some body-piercing, but you deserve whatever ridicule you get if you actually affiliate with gothic styles.
