Goth

Post by XBC-Requiem »

I'm a goth.
Most of the time.
When I go to an interview, meet someone's parents/significant other, or someone important, I dress nicely, i.e. dress slacks and a dress shirt. I even wear my Army Class A Dress Uniform on rare occasion.
Image

Why is it publically accepted that goths are bad people? Sure, the tatoos/piercings/chains/mass of black scare some people, but that's only because people are, in my opinion, generally shallow. They don't see past the skin.
In fact, most gothic people are extremely open-minded, fun, and occasionally intelligent. Hell, I've seen fellow Caterpillar employees (Administration, not shop people) at a concert in full-out gothic clothing.

I wear fishnet shirts, chain collars, spiked bracelets, chain-riddled pants. I have a couple of tattoos. I had a mohawk and a "goat beard" before I enlisted. I have three piercings in my ear, and am getting two in my lip. (Yes, those are acceptable in the Army, I just have to take them out while in uniform)
Image

Why are people so unaccepting? I am probably one of the most unique people you could ever meet. A lot of people don't get to see that, though, because they judge. That's part of the reason that I wear what I do.

The largest reason that I wear gothic clothing is becase I can. It's what I choose to wear. Why do you wear faded blue jeans insted of dark blue? Why do you wear a hoodie instead of a coat? Because you want to. It's the same logic.
The other reason is because it filters out who's worth talking to and who's not. If you won't come up and talk to me because of what I wear, then you are not worth my time.

Fishnets are made for everyone. You must not have a diverse population where you live. And they're not just made for men. And, 'bad'? Why?

If thats what people like then you shouldn't care, I respect your opinion but respect mine when I find the comment you made very closed minded.
At least I'm not alone here. I do appreciate his, Trulife8342.

People like to be around other people who are like them, both physically and mentally. Most people don't like it because it's different, and they find that unappealing. It's a natural thing, unfortunately.

I won't lie, I'm not a fan of it, I think it's weird. I'm not saying I've completely avoided goth people my whole life, but I generally won't walk up to someone who looks like that because of what I've said. I've always tried to accept everyone, but sometimes it can be hard to go against what you've known your whole life. The same thing occurs with people of different race, religion, or social status. Once again, I won't lie; if I'm not around a group of white, middle class, Christian people, I tend to feel awkward or nervous. I don't totally know how other people are because I'm not around them that much, so I just try to be nice and hope they act the same way to me. And because of this, I actually do have friends of different race, religion, etc. You're not bad for wanting to do the things you do or wear what you want to wear, but I'm not bad for feeling strange about it either. You can't just tell people to accept you and expect to get that acceptance instantly, it takes more than that. People will always judge, because it's an instinctual thing to do; if you see a bus tipping off of a broken bridge, you're going to move out of the way of where it might fall, just because it might fall there.

And let's face it, there's ALWAYS going to be that stubborn group who just won't accept it, or any idea for that matter.

(Note that I don't know if you have any different beliefs than the majority here, I'm just putting it out there as another example of why people don't accept other people.)

So, if the public doesnt accept you and its not worth your time, whats the purpose of this thread?

I don't really have a problem with any styles of clothing...I grew up in an extremely mixed environment, my oldest sister was the typical goth antisocial loser kid, and my middle sister was the preppy popular cheerleader who was friends with everyone. I'm more of a jock kid, but I have tons of friends from different ends of the spectrum, and I see no reason why people feel the need to separate and form cliques. If anything, I'd say it's more of the general attitude associated with clothing styles that makes people not talk to others.

Although I will say I can't stand guys who wear girl pants. Fuck those kids, seriously...there's a reason they're fucking called girl pants you homosexual. Also, guys who have little/no muscle and wear tight shirts and/or push their chest out.

I have no problem with it neither do my parents. I hang around with several different types of people. Most of my friends are either Scene, Goth, or Emo. It doesn't make a difference to me though. Most people think I'm goth, just because I listen to Nine Inch Nails, and Skinny Puppy. Then there are also people who think I'm Emo because I listen to bands like Underoath, Chiodos, Killswitch Engage, and other band like that. >_> I really don't care what people think of me, It's someones choice to dress the way they dress, or look the way they look. I don't care what people call me, It's the way I want to look. Anyone who criticizes it is just stupid. I don't tell anyone how to live their lives, and they shouldn't either.

They aren't girl pants, those are just tight jeans that look girly. I know plenty of people who wear them, and they aren't homosexual. I also no plenty of people who wear tight shirts. They aren't trying to looks strong/tough. It's just the way they like to dress. I usually dress that way too, no one seems to have a problem with it in my school.

There are tons of things you can say about anyone. Jocks, Emos, Scene Kids, Goths, Preps, Geeks, Nerds. There are thousands of things you can say about them, but it's their lifestyle, so who the fuck cares.

I can understand it when skaters wear them, because of the elastic being more comfortable or whatever, but they ARE girl pants. Guy jeans do not come in those sizes. Guy jeans don't cut your ball sack in half. They're girl pants.

As for the tight shirts bit, I'm talking about people who are trying to look strong/tough.

Being a goth isn't bad. Its a phase (for some a lifelong thing). My cousin is a goth and his room is all metal (music) posters, he has long hair which he dyed black, he has long painted fingernails (he says its to play the guitar without a pick  ), he wears black clothes and boots during the summer, and makes out with his girlfriend like its the end of the world in public.

For most, in extreme cases, being a goth is simply a means of rebellion.
Or as my cousin who is also currently in the military and never went through this phase said, "Its a phase. He's getting some shits and giggles out of it. He thinks its cool."

I'm not saying all goths are like this, but some are.

I agree with GametagAeonFlux, They are girls pants.... And theres only 2 reasons i can think off to wear them, 1) you are bi/homo-sexual or 2) you are a sad emo who will do anything for attention.

With that said the reason goths arent accepted is the same as reason 2. You all do it for attention dispite how much u will insist you dont. Theres no "fashionable" nor senseable reason to wear the things emos and goths wear. And dont give me the oh its being individual crap either, you all dress the same, black, chains, fishnets, makeup..... woo your cool... and the fact you were your army uniform to important things just backs up the attention theory even more. And i wont even get started on joining the army in the first place, thats just stupidity in my book.
Don't be.

In my opinion, goths scare me. I find them wierd. Maybe the reason why I don't know them is because I'm too afraid to approach them. Sorry if I offended anyone, but this is what I think, sorry.

Why aren't Xero, Mar, or Voided here yet? I'm not posting my thoughts on this until one of them shows up. Otherwise I may just pull from one of the 3 other goth discussions that occurred in o5. Seriously, it makes you guys look like you want attention. I mean, I don't see any topics on why Jocks get all the girls.

Exactly CocoFang. You can't label someone, and someone can't label them self. They are who they are. Who cares if they wear "girl" pants, dye their hair black, or listen to certain music.

Wearing girl pants is just as bad as a dude wearing a dress. Last I checked, that's not fucking normal. That's cross dressing. It's ok to be a homosexual/bi, but at least dress like your damn gender.

Hair/music...um, sure, who cares? It's when people go about sprouting their self-righteous I HEARD OF THIS RANDOM OBSCURE BAND BEFORE YOU THEREFORE I AM BETTER crap that is annoying.

Also, surprise, you can label someone. Shocking, I know.

Probably because "Goth" has been stereotyped into "Cutting wrists / worshiping the devil".

Although, I'm one of those rare few who will hang out with anyone. Walk up to you and say hey. Black, White, Mexican, Goth, Nerd, Skate Boarder, whatever. I really don't care.

This is how I see it : As long as the group that I'm around aren't trying to hurt me physically then I'm fine being around that group of people. I'm not a paranoid person and I don't get afraid of people by what they look like.

I personally don't care what other people think, I let them label me and judge me and all that. Their opinions don't matter to me, I am who I am and nobody's opinion on what I should be or why I should conform to their liking is going to change me.

I don't like the look? It doesn't go very far beyond that because I don't really know people that do it. but seeing the people in that kind of clothes makes me shudder and appreciate people that don't do that...

However thats a double edged sword, without people looking different I'd be complaining about how globally homogenised our culture is when everyone is looking the same.
