Oink servers raided, admin arrested

Post by ProphetOfDeath »

Taken from MTV.com

A special message greeted some of the estimated 180,000 paid members of music file-sharing Web site OiNK.cd when they tried to access it on Tuesday: "This site has been closed as a result of a criminal investigation by IFPI [International Federation of the Phonographic Industry], BPI [British Phonographic Industry], Cleveland [U.K.] police and the Fiscal Investigation Unit of the Dutch police, into suspected illegal music distribution. A criminal investigation continues into the identities and activities of the site's users."

Firstly, it wasn't a paid service. It was invitation only, there were no fee's.

And I was just getting my ratio up aswell, FFS.

I think they meant to say that users were encouraged to donate.

I don't think music sharing should be illegal. I think sharing music, promotes bands more than radio/tv. I myself download albums. If I like it, I go buy it to support the artist. If I don't, I obviously delete it. There's no point in keeping music you don't like.

Not to mention that most bands put the entire album up on Myspace or something at a lower bitrate, or the tons of YouTube videos featuring full songs.

Also, no one even buys CDs anymore, everyone I know just uses iTunes...I highly doubt that music sharing has caused that large of an impact.

I still buy CDs >_>. I doubt bands really give a shit if their music is shared. No matter what, people will still buy music. I always see music stores full of people.

Well, I meant a vast majority, but regardless...

Also, bands (or their record company, whatever) make plenty of money touring too...concerts are always so packed...they're still making a huge profit.

Use iTunes :P

Mainly saying that is because they're putting out a lot of DRM-free music now.
DRM-Free music is what I see as the "great compromise". It's sort of the happy medium between downloading music and buying music... There will always be people downloading music illegally, but if there is DRM-Free music around, I'd be more than twice as likely to buy that than if it was DRM-Protected... And it doesn't have to be iTunes, I was just using that as an example.

The bands themselves generally make a killing off of the concerts, which is why I try to go to bands I like whenever possible. Sure, some portion will go to the promotional group and paying for the venue, but it's a better return than albums.

OiNK admin is already back at home. Site should be back up soon, with any luck.

And GTAF, you can't charge someone for encouraging people to donate. I think they made a mistake, because it's invite-only, rogue users were selling invites on other sites.

...what? So they made this whole grand deal about it, and after a day everything's back to normal? There's no way the site is going to remain the same (i.e. free music torrents).

I know they can't, just stating that media tends to blow things out of proportion and report fallacies.
