For most (not all) First-Person Shooters, I think this is a terrible idea.

Here's how I predict a game would turn out:

Join game, spawn, die instantly, due to so many rounds flying everywhere

or

They would have to spread the maps out so widely that it would take so long to make progress. Also, the game would have such massive scale, it would be more of a chance of how many good people you happen to get on your team, not so much a measure of each individual player skill. There would just be so many people that one single person wouldn't be able to make a difference, and a majority players would have a feeling of unimportance.

Don't get me wrong, this idea could work for some genres such as Open-World and MMO styles of gameplay. Despite it most likely not working for most games, it still is breakthrough technology that will help in other aspects of games.

Trust me...in 64 player BF games, 1 person can turn the entire tide of a match. Now I know scaled to 1000 people it probably won't happen as much...but there is difference that can be made.

Oh, I know how that can happen, but I just can't believe that in 1000 player matches, it's not only going to happen at all, but there would be so many people, that the only players that it's ever going to happen to, are the ones who extraordinarily good at the game, as in the ones that are constantly winning tournaments, which kind of rules out so much of the fun for the average, casual gamer.

Ah. Yeah, you've got a point there. FPS games would fail hard with 1000 people.
I could see around 100 happening, though.

Whenever I play online games, I'm used to having a small amount of people, like 10-12 players or so, mainly so people will get to know me and I will be well known on the server. Having 1000 players would kill this. The only people who MIGHT be known would be those who sat in front of their computer through day and night eating ramen every meal and drinking large amounts of energy drinks to stay awake :P . In some instances it would kick hiney but never in a shooter type game. I think this would be fun for a massive RTS tho. Mb an AOE on steroids

That'd be fun no doubt, but it has to be on the perfect game for it...

Epic Win. I line of 1000 people runing up the corkscrew thing while jumping and ducking to avoid thick metal bars.

I'm thinking it would be logical to incorporate something of this caliber with like Battlefield 3, and have it as realistic as possible, down to every last aspect, most importantly, size. Making it kind of like Oblivion, with big fucking maps, and having real sized battalions and planned battles with thousands of other people fighting against you but in different area of a large map.

I personally think this could be in the future of gaming, because the possibilities of implementation of strategy in a realistic country-sized map for Kuwait or something would be endless and incredible.

The scale of the maps would be, granted, really really fucking huge, but if Moore's law continues to hold truth, than in the near future developers could focus the processing power on making larger maps and having much more complicated strategy taking place.

The problem is, if gaming got this involved, people would never leave their house. Case in point: WoW.

Yeah, but it really wouldn't work in a game like counterstrike because the round would take forever to finish.
fyi_ice_world can take a long time, and you that map is fucking tiny.

fyi? I haven't seen that prefix before, only fy (fight yard). In the case of fy_ice_world, that map never takes forever to finish...I don't know what kind of people you're playing with. :?

For the most part, that's already been done. See: PlanetSide.

It might have been fy, I haven't played CZ in a long time. And I've seen people go in the same direction for a few minutes before realizing how stupid they're being.
Planetside was a joke.. Starting out against people with triple barrel shotguns sucks ass.
