aim trackers

Post by sneakyn8 »

ok i just found out that my parents use aim tracker to find out who im hanging out with and if theyre "good" or not so i was wondering a couple of things:
1. how legal are aim trackers?
2. who here has to deal with their parents using aim trackers to find out everything about you?
3. is there a way to counter aim trackers?

1. They're 100% legal.
2. Not me.
3. Task Manager -> End Process. If you don't have an admin account on your PC, you can try booting in Safe Mode and uninstalling it, but that'd probably lead to your parents finding out and causing them to trust you even less.

Just talk to your parents and tell them that you're a responsible kid. Personally, I think they're being overprotective parents (unless you've like, previously been an addict of some sort)...and in that case, you're basically fucked because there's no advice I can give you to stop them...you gotta show them who's boss before they try to assert their authority.

Or you can just not talk to bad people/talk about drugs like NSN said. The truly innocent have nothing to fear.

So tell them to stop being over protective. Tell them you're growing up and maturing, and need to learn how to make your own decisions. Mommy and daddy can't be there to hold your hand forever, and if you never learn how to make smart decisions during your high school years, you're going to be living a very...unfulfilling life.

Try to find a way to prove you're responsible.

I had a big problem with this. My parents went to the extreme. They had some program which logged all the websites and such I went to. They had my computer keylogged. They had it so they could access my computer from theirs upstairs and actually bring my screen up on their screen.

Here's a story of how I found this out...

On day a long time ago (to keep this short) my mom REALLY pissed me of so to blow off some steam I went to the clan forums of a Halo 2 clan i was in at the time and said some.... stuff.

I come home from school and she has a print-out of the exact post I posted on the forums. That made me mad.

But I'm 18 now and she wouldn't do that again.

If its bothering you that much get Damn Small Linux or Feather linux and boot from the CD so that they can't see anything.

Also, my parents don't care what I do on the computer as long as it stays virus free.

a boot cd would be too much of a hassle.

step 1: delegate with parents for removal of aim tracker. either use well-crafted conversation, or just prove to them you're responsible, or ned to learn to be.

if that fails, you can either accept it and listen to your parents, or you can go over their head and disable the software when you're on aim. the task manager method should work, but if it doesn't, check run>msconfig or look through the registry to see where it's set to start up, and disable it if you want to. they'd be alerted before long from the lack of logs, but only turning the program off at certain times would help with that.

personally, i'd be kinda ticked at my mom for doing something like that. if i have an aim conversation open and go away to band practice, she'll probably read it over, but i just close the window before i leave, or just don't even care (depending on the conversation). my situation's probably a little different though, because i'm 17 (not sure how old you are)

Not really it takes 5-10 min to download and then you just burn the iso and bam boot cd.

I IM a lot of you guys, and my parents don't really like it, but for the most part they don't care. They'd never keylog or track me. I suppose I've managed to build up the trust. As for your situation...You're almost screwed vicariously through your brother. I'd wait it out for a little while and "lay low". After a while talk to your parents casually about it. Or use an internet AIM program like Aim from my Psp.
