Alchemy...

Post by CDK908 »

alchemy isn't that far off...if you understand matter and atoms alchemy is possible, well part of it. the part im talking about is the part where you change an element such as lead into another element such as gold.

it's still a very complex job to do it but the theory isn't very complex at all...you take lead in small pieces. you keep adding nuetrons protons and electrons til it's atomic weight, and mass are equal to a gold atom. but like i said it's not far off in fatasy land but still not in the reach of current time and with current technology...

Some of the elements on the periodic table can only be created in labs. If they can create those elements, don't you think they'd be able to create gold from lead?

they would have to do atoms at a time..and an atom of gold isnt worth that much dude.

the man made elements is a completely different story than trying to change the molecular structure of say lead to gold. And yea an atom of gold would be so small you would have to start with that and add millions more which would take a very long time.

i was having second thoughts of that last post. but yea, its a total amount of 7*1027 that is 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms in 70 kg

I would estimate that the time required to do that would equate out to longer than the time human species has existed.

Someone still want to do it?

The elements they make from the process (Unununium, etc) only last seconds or less before it "disappears." Transmuting anything into gold takes massive amounts of energy (and effort, thus funding), with results in the microscopic range. Like paying someone $10 to take your penny and turn it into a quarter.

that's why i said it's possible but not at current time with current technology. they need to find a way to add to all the atoms at almost the same time..

I never said it was practical.

besides, once you get to the point where the money you put in is less than the money you get out, and the process is widely used, gold will start to become worthless because then anyone could just create it from lead.

although, i'm also fascinated by alchemy from what little i know, such as an element giving off beta radiation, thus becoming a different element. really, impractical and kind of worthless in today's world, but fascinating nonetheless.

thats just weird, and i understand on the alchemy it doesn't fit with our world today but i like reading what ancient scholars had found on the subject.

*Doesn't bother to read any posts in this thread except the first*
It's entirely possible to make gold from lower elements, but it's just plain stupid and pointless now because of the costs - and the fact that gold isn't the big amazing thing it was back when alchemy was popular. Back then, gold was though to be the most miraculous material in existence. Now it's just a shiny, highly malleable metal that works quite nicely with electrical components.

Possible? Indeed.
Worth it? Hell no!
Cool? I guess.
Interesting concept? Yes. The fact that we can do now what scientist were trying to do for hundreds of years, yet knowing that it no longer serves a purpose, that is quite interesting indeed.
