I'm afraid you have it backwards...It becomes harder to make an outstanding mod, not easier...Just because less mods are made, doesn't mean we should suddenly make mods outstanding just for being good...pepsi711 wrote:your seriously not expecting a mod to get thoes results today with the game being 4 years old now, 2 sequels and better games like UT, CS:S, BF2 and people in WoW and GW?
some tolerances and standards need to be lowered some since the prime of halo modding has gone and past. no doubt what people as yourself have done in the past was groundbreaking but there is hardly any ground to break anymore since most good modders have gone to CE.
so thoes dedicated to PC are getting shafted by trying to live up to past expectations and something groundbreaking when its not going to happen. its like expecting $5 in gas to get you the same distances it did 4 years ago.
not trying to flame ya man, but comparing the past with the present doesnt seem like a good argument.
And you're wrong on your following post aswell...There are things that make it outstanding...The first is, you look at a mod and you instantly go "wow, thats freaking amazing!"...Imagine there are 0 tools that let you inject bitmaps, and someone releases a really well done skin...You'd see it, never seen anything like it before, and think to yourself "wow, that's freaking amazing!"...
The other thing, is just public opinion...Real public opinion...As I said before, and before that...10 pages of "wow, this should be outstanding", and "10/10 man, awesome" isn't public opinion, it's people weighing in based on some picture in the thread...They probably didn't even try it...Now, if it's several pages of peoples comments, asking how things work, etc. etc., and you can actually tell tons of people are actually playing the mod, and still playing the mod...Then you go "well, thats above average now isn't it", and it becomes outstanding...
The fact that you have all the tools at your disposal now to do amazing things with HPC, just makes it that much harder to do something that jumps out as outstanding...Yes the game is years old...In my opinion, an outstanding mod takes x amount of time...Since you have all those tools at your disposal, you should still spend x amount of time, but with those tools x creates a much better mod than 4 years ago...This far into the cycle of HPC, there should be basically no outstanding mods unless that time and effort is put in...To lower the standards would be an insult to those who have made it...
And as for you not asking for your mod to be outstanding, you made several references to your mod, and how many downloads it had, and how you felt upset that your mod didn't make it in this thread...

Yeah, I agree with all of that. I don't know how many posts I've read that have some simple HPC mod on it, and people say "OMFG, that is teh shiz! 10/10!!! OMG, please move this to Outstanding mods "
Iron_Forge's comment about the modding tools is true. To someone who has never seen a mod before, something simple will blow their mind away. I've played on servers with something such as an added teleporter, or infinite ammo, and everyone is compilmenting it and saying how cool it is. Really, doing something like that is easy.
Without modding tools, someone would have to hex stuff in. Now, hexing is really tough, and those who can accuratly do it deserve 3 thumbs up. SP -> MP maps are tough to make, and someone who makes a good one out of that deserves regonition.
There's not really much more we can discuss here. Injecting new skins isn't regonizable. New models? Maybe. Modified weapons? No.

That's not the issue. It's not "Well, skins aren't outstanding" or "weapons aren't outstanding." The issue is not with one thing that makes or breaks a mod's outstanding..ness, it's the mod as a whole. Everything working together to make an outstanding mod.McJix wrote:There's not really much more we can discuss here. Injecting new skins isn't regonizable. New models? Maybe. Modified weapons? No.

Yeah, I know. I was just referring to simple little mods that some people do.Tural wrote: That's not the issue. It's not "Well, skins aren't outstanding" or "weapons aren't outstanding." Well, just plain texture injection isn't always what is done. Injecting the texture itself is easy, couple buttons. It's the time it takes to create all the skins used. It's not about how easy it is to put into the game, it's about how much effort and quality everything made for the mod shows. As an example, the 2 mods I have made for Halo PC that made it into Outstanding are both texture injection, but they made it there because of how everything meshed.
I dunno if this is the right time to ask this, but is there any way we could replace the old version of my mod "Halo: The Way it was Meant to be Played" with the new version in the downloads section?

Totally with you on that one. My mod would have been outright sucky if it was just one of the weapon mods. But since it meshed together, I got some good public opinion, and it got moved to outstanding.
That's all the system we need. If people agree the mod meshes together well, ask questions, post positive comments that have some knowledge of the mod in them, the mod deserves outstanding.
My two cents.
