Use Google to search this site, even if it's down

Post by CaptainPoopface »

The Halomods search feature is a nice way to sift through the wealth of information on this site, but let's face it: Typing those booleans is old school, and it's a hassle. The track record indicates that people aren't comfortable doing that, or just can't be bothered to waste time and precious ATP on those keystrokes.

What's more, this great repository of knowledge does go down from time to time, and we cry ourselves to sleep every night until it's back up.

Here is the solution.

Go to Google, type whatever you're looking for, and at the end of the search string, type "site:halomods.com" without the quotes. This tells Google to only return results from the halomods.com domain.

An example (skip if you know yer Google): Let's say you're trying to figure out how to make the needler shoot blue needles. You might type something like:
needler blue needles projectile site:halomods.com

Google will do its thing. Let's say it returns 1,032 results, a suspiciously large number. You take a glance at the first few links and see that they have nothing to do with what you're searching for. What gives? Push [ctrl] and F, then type one of the words from your search query. "Blue," let's say. Your web browser will zip to the first instance of that word (learn to use this feature if this is new to you). You see that it highlights a user by the name of Blue Ray (this is a hypothetical example), and he has entered the text "on pins and needles" for his location. So Google is returning every single one of his posts, because he has "blue" and "needles" in his avatar/signature/whatever.

Not to worry. We may be able to weed out these irrelevant results. Look at his sig/avatar, and try to find a distinct phrase in it that is not likely to be used in many other contexts. Go back to Google, and this time type:
needler blue needles projectile -"location: on pins and needles" site:halomods.com

It's the same query you entered before, only now Google will omit any results which contain the phrase "location: on pins and needles" because you preceded it with a minus sign.

So Google returns 27 results this time, and you see from the first few links that this is what you're looking for. Congratulations. You've avoided cluttering the front page and irking members with a redundant question, and you've saved halomods.com a little bandwidth, all without typing any booleans!

If Halomods is down...
You can still access its entire backlog, usually within about a month of the current date. Type your query in Google as described above. At the bottom of each returned link, there is the word "Cached," underlined in blue. Click that. Google will try to load images from the halomods server. If the page seems to hang, look at the top of the page and click the little blue link that says "cached text." Now you can read everything on the page! There will be no pictures, and it's not pretty, but the knowledge is there, the links will work, and it's better than a sharp stick in the eye.

* You can also use Google's cached text feature to browse any other pages that are down or that have very obnoxious flashy graphics and content, when all you want is the text.

Just remember that the "Googlebot" may not have found or updated the thread(s) of what you're searching for when you go to the cached pages.
I once found something that hadn't been updated in 3 months  !

Very nice job man! Just a heads up to all people, there are many codes like this to help you flood out other searches in google and this may be one of the simplest ones.

Again, nice tutorial, keep it up! :)
