Choppy?

Post by Retsameht »

Well I've tried as hard as I can, but I can NOT seem to get halo 2v to run completly smooth on my computer. The Strange thing is, my FPS hovers at around 70 when i run around, but the minuet I turn sharply it drops down to like 10. Now I'm no computer fool and I also know that my system should be able to run this game fine.

my specs:

AMD Athalon 64 3800+ 2.4 Ghz
1gb Ram
Nvidia GeForce 8600GT
Windows Vista Home Basic

Anyone have any ideas why im experiencing this huge FPS drop?

What type of internet do you have? (Not sure if that would be the problem, but you never know.)

Well I have ADSL, but that shouldn't have anything to do with it, as it happens in SP too. I also play alot more internet taxing games than H2 just fine on this pc.

I can't say for sure, but it sounds like your processor needs an upgrade first, and if that doesn't work...another gb of RAM oughta fix it.

why would my processor need an upgrade? I just checked and when running h2v my processor rarely reaches above 50% usage.

The recommended PC specs suggest a 3 ghz processor.

His processor is a dual core. It really doesn't need an upgrade. His ram would be the only concern which I'm not even sure if thats the problem. I would update all of your drivers before doing anything.

How far are you looking when you turn? I remember back on my XP on some maps, if I looked to far ahead, then I'd expiriance lag becuase the game would have to draw it in and my poor X200 couldn't handle it very well. Its probably becuase when you turn, the game has to load more on the screen instead of when you just walk strait. That's just my thoughts though.

Try lowering your settings if you can.

Occlusion culling - a rather math-intensive technique used to find what can be seen, thus what to draw. It'll happen every time the view matrix is changed, hence, when you move, or if more cleverly integrated; only when you turn. (Mehh, there's slightly more to it than that.. but w/e)

Math is performed on the CPU.

and GPU... Which basically is another CPU. His problem probably lies in his drivers.

Your processor is fine, my brother runs it smoothly with a AMD 3200. It's your RAM. Vista used at least a 600mb of ram, You need another 1gb stick. My brothers game ran choppy until he did that.

I agree with GTAF (unless that processor really is dual core, but 2.8 ghz? That's like, a total speed of 5.8ghz! and it's athlon... not turion... I don't think it could be dual core, but I don't know my AMD processors).

Yeah if that CPU is dual core, you should have no problem at all there, you should definitely upgrade your RAM. I mean, I scold myself for only having 1gb but I'm getting a new computer. Yeah, get 2 GB or higher. Vista is a memory hog.

Thats true, you could try reverting to a classic style look as well as increasing the amount your comp. uses as virtual memory, that should make a difference.

Okay, download the latest Nvidia drivers. Change the quality settings in the nvidia control panal to speed over looks. And if that doesn't work lower your resolution some.

Just a hunch that will help.

Try lowering your visual settings. I had to do that on one of my comps. The game didnt look real pretty after, but it ran smooth. Anti-Alising and the resoultion are the biggest RAM eaters.

I really think it's the ram guys. Windows vista states on the box that it requires 1 gig of ram to run. So other programs are probably very slow with only 1 gig of ram total.

I think all he needs to do is lower some video settings, and close any unnessary programs and applications before playing.

how choppy is it? your comp more than meets specs.. "like mine" but a very stupid maybe answer that nobody thinks of.. i installed vista over xp and had serious problems with halo and shadowrun online games and all i needed to do is install vista on a clean partition.. very easy and vista courtiously saves all your files. new microsoft shit kicks ass...
