Need help making a server

Post by SuperCommando »

Hey guys, I need to know how to turn a old computer with Windows 3.1 into a server, I need to know how to get windows 3.1 to recognize the ethernet card, and a good server program.

The machine's specs if you care are:

Pentium PRO MMX-200MHz~
either 2 or 4MB Trident Video card
32MB RAM
8x CDROM
floppy drive
1.6 GB Drive

windows 3.1? well, i don't know alot about it at all, but i suppose if you were going to get a server of some sort going, try something like damn small linux, or maybe some other distro designed specifically for ancient equipment. i don't know of any server programs for 3.1, but there's gotta be some, so maybe use a spare hard drive to install linux on so the windows is alright, unless you have a way to reinstall windows.

It will hold 1 site fine, since the site in question is currently 10MB in size...

Netserver is for the NT line, and you have to pay for serv-u ftp, and I'm not upgrading anything, I'm not putting any money into the computer.

have you tried googling for 3.1 server apps? i've never used 3.1, so i don't know alot about it. maybe try asking some more tech-centered forums? possibly maximumpc.com...

I have and found a few, The biggest problem now is getting windows 3.1 to see the network card, it finds the modem, but not the ethernet card, any ideas?

what sort of network card is it? i'm not posotive if PCI was in widespread use back then, maybe the NIC manufacturer or microsoft's website has drivers for it? you may need to try and find an ISA NIC, and going that far back, you may need to assign the IRQ and memory ranges (although that's still probably a stretch)

Its a AMDtek AN983B
I looked for drivers and found some claiming it was for 3.1 but they are 9x drivers, can you get those to work under 3.1?

i wouldn't think so...... it might be worth a try, but if you try it, you'll REALLY want a way to backup and re-use the old drivers.

maybe you could get some luck from the wayback machine?
