The lens flare

Post by ScottyGEE »

Why are lens flares used to create a realistic experience or something in so many games? the lens flare is used so much and then I think to myself, why is it there?
I never get these lens flares or anything of the sort when I see bright lights or the sun, so if anything these games take away from realism that they are trying to achieve...

So why do they have it? :?

A very valid point, and I honestly don't have an answer than the fact that it adds to the ambiance whether it works towards realism or not.

No, it's the ring-like shapes coming off of the light source. It's an effect that cameras can pick up, but the human eye can't.

Yet its in FPS games >_<
It would also be reduced even further in Halo...Because the masterchief has the gold visor, which isn't that used by space people to reduce glare and such?

Spartan, you're wierd :P Or I am because I dont

i know, i was just thinking about this when i was watching fireworks just an hour ago. brightening the screen when you look at the sun is acceptable, but camera-like lensflare is just dumb. there is a bit of bleed-over/flare of a sort, but not like what cameras have.

Despite that, you can't deny that the gold visor is still there.

That would make it kind of hard to play, though...

Well, it wouldn't be a very fun game with that there, though would it? Plus it would just get annoying after a while.
