You can install Vista without a license for 30 days, in which time you can muster up some money for a Vista license or find an XP disc.

By the way, it won't install Vista either unless you do a clean install and have a valid activation key. I'm not sure if upgrading requires an activation key or not, nor am I sure if it performs a clean install, though I doubt it.

no, I thought at first it would just recover the computers OS only with windows vista instead of XP. I thought that's what a recovery disk does, completely format the harddrive and install the OS it contains. But, what do I know? I've never had to do this before. I'll just borrow an xp recovery disk.

No. A recovery disc restores your PC to factory default. A lot of the time, it doesn't even format the drive and install the OS clean, but rather "fix" the changes from factory default.

Ok, then my lasy question is, how would I go about cleaning my entire PC, clearing every bit of information I have ever put into it, but keeping the OS. Basically, making the HDD the same way it was when I first took the computer out of the box?

Honestly I would use your genuine Windows CD, and format your entire harddrive(O/S included) and then you would re-install windows, re-download your drivers, and it will be about the exact same. It would be better to do it that way, because many viruses stay in your O/S files.

So basically:
-Format, Removes all data, and O/S.
-Re-Install O/S
-Re-Install Drivers so all your computer devices work properly.

My computer got fucked up (said that C Drive was corrupted

) so I re-installed Windows and re-installed my drivers and its back to normal. But since you can get into your desktop, I'd reccommend that you back up your files to a Flash Drive. Btw, I'm using the same computer, works perfectly.
It's always good to have a brother who knows his shit and has access to all that.

ok, i think iknow how to do the first step, but i need to know how to do the second two. uh, that genuine windows cd, is that anything like that vista cd i can buy at circuit city? and, i am completely oblivious on how i reinstall drivers.

That would be in fact a Genuine Copy of a Windows CD. The Dirvers (If in fact you are going to use vista) could be an issue. There could be compatibility issues between the drivers and the OS. (especially if you're using any old hardware. But If you're running Vista, your stuff should be fairly recent.)

Ok, well I think I might go buy a copy of Windows Vista. But, I'm confused on what a driver is, what I do to install one, and how do I know itf its vista compatible? Cus now my computer is XP, and it was built before vista came out, if that makes any differance.

Edit: I read at microsoft.com, and it says that I can do a "clean installation" with the vista disk I can buy. Does that mean that that will take care of formatting the HDD for me, or do I still have to do it?

A clean install means your current version of Windows, including all of your files, settings, and programs, is automatically replaced. You can back up your files and settings, but must manually reinstall your programs when the installation is done.

drivers tell the OS and programs how to use a specific device. for example, if you get a shiny new videocard, it's usually packaged with drivers on a cd so your computer can use it. if you reinstall vista or xp you'll be fine with drivers unless you have some odd sort of equipment that needs special ones, but in that case there's usually a cd that came with it that has the drivers on it. also, installing a driver usually involves a wizard and a reboot, judging on my experience installing an x800.

your pc will most likely be fine for vista drivers-wise, even though there's beeen issues with vista and drivers. i'd say it's up to you whether or not you want to buy vista or xp, although if you want to upgrade the pc you have now and continue playing games, you may want to get vista...

I feel special; I've completely @$$R@P3D my laptop about 3 time; the damn thing is decent for like an office worker or something but for a gamer its lame as heck. I'm ditching it on my sister when I get a working Desktop Computer. Anyways back to my "special"ness. My computer has a secure partition that stores a clean factory default OS (XP MCE)--plus an added feature I found out of a No-Questions-Asked, 2 month subscription to Norton Anti-virus, as well as some other goodies. I also believe there is a bootup short cut that just restores everything right then and there but I never used that. So basically all I have to do to fix my laptop is press some buttons and away I go; back to original.

Another cool feature is the two partitions (usable) that my crappy 100MB(80ish after secure partition is taken into account...) Harddrive is divided into. The C:\ stores my OS, most programs, while my D:\ stores my Data, and special files. So while my C:\ gets restored to Factory Default the D:\ keeps all my info :p

I know this doesn't help you but just an example of an innovation that helps get rid of the awkward, stressful moments that you can get into with a windows computer.

I posted this because I had the feeling that you had solved you problem for the most part and...

If you cannot get a decent OS disk to work there is always Linux.

well, i am hoping to go and buy a vista cd today and see how that works. if there is a problem with something like a graphics card on vista, would it effect normal computer usage, or just stuff like games? and how would i go about fixing it?

If vista doesn't support your card your gonna be running like 8 colors, 640X800 resolution or simply not work (I used XP/98 and that had been my experience).

vista is installing right now (im on my wii so thats how im here) and i am confident it will work. thank you, everyone who helped me with this huge issue i've been having. =]
