boycott the RIAA

Post by [cc]z@nd! »

article here.

put your money where your mouth is; boycott the RIAA this march.

as we all know, the RIAA is getting way out of hand in their last-ditch witch-hunt to try and 'save' the corporate music industry. IF you want to put a stop to it, IF you want to do something, then do this: stop buying their music.

the only reason that the RIAA has the funds to pursue frivilous lawsuits is because people keep buying music that are under labels in affiliation with the RIAA. if you want to declaw this beast and listen to music as much as you want, where you want, how you want, then boycott RIAA labels this march. i'm not saying to pirate music instead, but I personally suggest checking out indie bands, where your money goes strait to the artist you support.

this march, do not support the RIAA as they extort thousands of dollars from people they intimidate. tell them that you do not support their action buy not buying a single RIAA-supported label cd this month, because if you aren't helping them, you're hurting them.

to check to see if a cd you are looking to buy will give money to the spawn of corporate satan, go here. also, visit the article i linked to in the beginning of this post and read it, so you don't get misinformed or mistaken. what i typed in my post above is my interpretation of the article, so that if you are too lazy to open another window, you will still get the basic idea, but i strongly urge you (as much as i can over the internet) to read the article.

and remember, you're the only person that can stop them, because buying their music gets another poor soul sued.

You can't stop everyone (Hell, an internet boycott won't even stop a majority, or any significant amount), this is virtually pointless. The people who buy music shouldn't have to do anything, because it doesn't matter to them.

This thread is basically a chain email, but without the spam folder.

Buy whatever music you want to.

i don't mean to spam, i mean to try to get people to get up and do something. personally, there's no hope a one-month boycott spread around on the internet will do anything at all, but even if nothing happens, at least you've tried to do something instead of just letting it happen.

This time would be better spent trying to stop illegal downloading. It would be a lot more effective than a boycott of the RIAA, which would hardly even make a noticeable decline in sales.

They need to learn that the only way they'll stop piracy is if they shut down the internet completely.

Even then, people will find some way, even if it's trading burned DVDs.

There's plenty of excellent non riaa music out there you just gotta know where to look.

The internet archive has some excellent music

http://www.archive.org/details/opensource_audio

Another site which uses p2p for distrobution of Creative Commons audio is Jamendo

http://www.jamendo.com/en/

Go look up tryad - listen on jamendo. Its pretty good and unique.

Oh yea. The RIAA sucks. Riaaradar.com. etc...

All they have to do is shove their money into the tubes, then they'll clog up.

Luckily all the bands I like don't have the RIAA labels on their albums so, yay.

"..whatever the riaa is"
...

anyways, speaking of the riaa, congress has introduced a "Freedom and Innovation Revitalizing U.S. Entrepreneurship" bill (isn't it cute how they spend so much time thinking up good acronyms?) otherwise called "fair use". gizmodo article on it here.

summary: this bill, as far as i know, will make DRM that severely limits the use of the music it is on illegal, so if this is passed, notorious DRM crippling, like only allowing a song to play for 3 weeks, will be a problem of the past.

That's actually a good idea...but knowing our government, they'll slip in some very interesting footnotes.
