Message of the Day Replacements Database!

Post by FleetAdmiralBacon »

MotD Replacement Strings.DLL libraries
Rid yourself of the 'manual update' messages once and for all!
For a long time, we've had to see a message telling us to get a nonexistant manual update for Halo Custom Edition, but not anymore. Simple file modifications and the dedication of websites allows us to put our own messages on the ticker of the web game lobby!

The Database
To my knowledge, the following websites are the only ones with MotDs:
H2Vista.net MotD : Download
Oasis-Games.com : Download

If you wish to add your MotD to the list, let me know!
I am actively working on a PHP script that will return listings from an entire set of websites, possibly even from RSS feeds, so make sure you let me know that your site is running an MotD so that you can be included in the universal system!

How to Make Your Own
First off, you need some webspace, something that can display a TXT document easily (not that hard to find)
Second, you're going to want to get a Resource Editor. My first Google result returned this free one.
Now, make a TXT document in notepad that has something like:

Code: Select all

Welcome to Halo CE v1.17! This is the new message of the day!
Save it as 'haloce_motd.txt' or something like that, and upload it to your website.
Open up the resource editor and open 'Strings.dll' (MAKE A COPY OF IT FIRST!). Find the "String Table" There should be one that says "http://www.bungie.net/halopc-motd.txt" or something along those lines. Replace it with the link to your new MotD, and then save the Strings.dll.
Open up Halo, go to the internet lobby, and admire your new message of the day!

So, what did we just do?
Halo links to a TXT document that used to be updated every so often. Bungie stopped caring, so it continually says the same thing. What we did was change the TXT document Halo looks for to one that we can modify every day.

I don't believe you, show me.
