PC makes clicking noises!

Post by SuperCommando »

So, I was using my PC and suddenly I notice that he's emitted a tapping noise, like, if a fan was hitting a ribbon, at first i was concerned because I was afraid that the HDD was failing, or a fan issue, so hoping it was the latter I investigated, it turns out, that it was coming from, or near too, my video card, Surprise! But this is the fun part, it only makes this noise when the Star Wars Galaxies patcher is running. I tested this by running several other programs, including another game patcher, but it ONLY does this when SWG is patching. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but what is it??

Bedhind?

If it's only when it patches, is it really that big of a deal?

It's your PC screaming out in protest. Standard procedure.

I can't see it being anything other than:
-A fan
-Hard drive
-CD/DVD drive

If it's the hard drive, that sucker is on its way out - I'd back up my crucial data just in case.

I'd contact the publisher/developer of the game and patcher and send some support emails.

ok,now,in all seriousness, when u run the patcher, does your processer fan come on? because alot of game patchers tend to make ur comp go nuts and work hard,if thats the case, try removing that plastic covering over the processer and processer fan

I had this EXACT same problem with my G4. At first I also thought it was a hard drive failure, but upon closer inspection I saw that it was coming from my video card's GPU fan. I tapped it a few times, and it never made the sound again. I think it might have been coming loose or something, or becoming unbalanced.

That's what I would've thought as well, but seeing as how it ONLY happens during that program, I ruled it out...WAIT. I KNOW. Your computer is a bomb.

I don't think my GPU has a fan on it, just a heatsink, as far as the processor fan goes, I'm not sure there's one over the heatsink either, there's a fan in front of it, that draws air through the heatsink, but its always running. maybe it just runs faster? I'll look at it.

Could be that the patch is doing some sort of stress test on your system or something.. Don't know.

The patch is likely rapidly opening/editing/saving files on the hard drive, thus making the hard drive click due to the large amount of usage it's getting. Meaning, it's possible the hard drive is on its way out.
