No kidding, on insane they're total pains to deal with. Simple rhyme to deal with them in close combat: smack and dive back. One good hit with the sniper rifle sends them into exploding, and a perfect combat roll backwards puts you out of the blast radius.

that would be a tie between jackals and elites. elites get cloaking and swords plus can command others, but jackals has got the beam rifles and sheilds so its a little tough

lambent wretches are annoying merely for the scream, that said; it also applies to regular wretches. It's such a horrible noise.
