Halo PC bumpmaps

Post by JK-47 »

I know Halo PC doesn't use bump-mapping, but I know it uses something else that people use.
Could someone just post a quickie on how to make custom PC fake bumps?

Halo uses bump maps.... but only on the bsp. They wont work on other objects.

You might be getting mixed up with bump maps and normal maps, they are basically the same thing, but normal maps tend to look better.

Those are for CE, those bump maps are different from PC because they use Black and White, as where PC uses something else. Which is why I'm stuck.

Lol sorry BEEF!!

Hmmm...go into HMT and go to the [bitm] tag. Now for some of the forerunner textures there are bump maps that are there as well. I think they they use werid colors like purple and cyan...anyways export the map and open it in photoshop. Assuming you know what this texture looks like in-game and having the bump map infront of you it souldnt be hard to edit them. I personally havent tried it, just an idea, ive seen the bumpmap tagds in HMT before though. Experiment with different color to get different bumps.

Ugh, you n00ber

Your best bet if you want an answer is get in contact with SuperSunny over on the GBX forums. He really knows his stuff when it comes to skinning, shaders, etc.

Well when you run them through tool with CE, it can convert them to NORMAL MAPS which is why in pc you see these bitmaps with a bunch of funky colors. Normal Maps give better appearance than black and white bump maps, which is why you see many of them. There is a free NVidia plugin for photoshop which converts black and white bump maps to NORMAL MAPS that you can prolly inject into hmt or whatever you guys are using nowadays. It should work if you use black and white bump maps anyways. Halo is able to use them both.
