Bad PC error :(

Post by MaestroMan »

ok, after installing half life 2 for the 7th time, my computer restarts itself.
Instead of going to the log in process a black and white messege comes up.
and i was given the following options:

-start windows in safe mode
-start windows in safe mode with port
-start windows in safe mode with taskbar

-start windows how you left it last (recommended for most similar settings)

-start windows normally

I have tried all 5 options, by the time it gets to the 'windows is starting up'
(with the blue loading bar) it restarts itself, and i'm brought back to square 1.

I am running windows xp home edition. Please, can any of you guys help

do this
start > control panel > performance and maintenace > system > advanced tab > settings for startup and recovery > under system failure uncheck the box: automatically restart.
that should fix the restart problem but then your computer will probaly just freeze up completely and you'll have to pull the power cord

ESIT : if u get an error that says windows has encountered a problem and needs to close, the kind that has the send or don't send thing at the bottom, then hit debug and tell us what it says
please dont insult my grammar,
im just too lazy to put in commas when im typing fast,
and my fingers are kinda clumsy which messes up spelling

It could be your power supply.
Mine never booted to windows after it blew, but it booted to free dos and the likes.

Open the case, place nose near power supply, sniff.
If it smells like smoke, burned rubber or anything else along those lines, you have a dead power supply.

If that's not the problem, and in fact, that's one of many possible problems, all of which are pretty much unrelated, then I can't help you.

So? Mine didn't have a black out either, and it smelled more like hot metal and it definitely didn't work properly. Also, I wasn't even running anything that would kill it - it just died.
It could be that Half Life 2 took too much power, so your supply couldn't handle it.
