So, I got myself 3DSMax. I really know nothing about rendering or modeling, but it's something I'd really be interested in learning. To be honest, I'm quite overwhelmed. Is there a basic starting tutorial somewhere? I couldn't seem to find one.

Go to the user forums, Platt's tutorial is ok for startes I guess. After you get the basics down, talk to some people and read this thread for more help. :)

Alright,I found it, but it's for the elite - is that gonna be an issue if I'm trying to do the MasterChief or do the steps kind of work either way?

Do the Elite first, get a feel for it, then do MC with the knowledge.

the one for the elite is what i based my material off of, but i didnt give it color and i used hdri to make the armor look like metal (or more metalish?). i learned the reflection part from doc. its fun now, but it will get boring. if you stick with it itll become fun again.

DWells55,
Read through all of the tutorials that 3ds max came with to start. It may seem boring and irrelevant but it will be worth it, trust me. As for your render, use Reflect /Refract maps in for the reflection and use cube maps (or HDRI or raytrace). Also use a specular map (The diffuse alpha works well, or you could make your own). Good job so far. 8)

You know, I started doing that actually. Quite overwhelming. For kicks I started on the modeling a pawn thing, and for some reason teh refine thing isn't adding a vertex...

Anyhoo, HK was kind enough to help me out with a few files and some support, I now have gotten this far:

you can use this as a basis to learn how to do stuff. this is incomplete btw, and ill probably post the updated version when i am done.

http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/h2emblem/

that is where i got the colors from. since there are no images from the game included, this should be allowed, however i will remove it if that is what the moderators/admins want.

the actual bitmaps must be extracted yourself.

edit: that material gives you this.

Haven't ever modded Halo 1, wouldn't have the slightest idea about getting the values.
