Proper BumpMap injection

Post by scynide »

I have Extracted the tires_bump for the warthog (using DotHalo) out of a modded map that has really cool tires that I would like to put into my shared.map. The BumpMap has been changed from the original (I know this because I opened it up in Photoshop CS2). When I try to inject it into the shared.map it tells me it needs to be a DXT format. What do I need to do to get it to inject properly?

You'll need the DDS Photoshop plugin.

It is here:

I already have that plugin. And I opened it just fine with Photoshop. That is not my problem. My problem is that I don't know how to properly inject the BumpMap back into a map. It gives me the DXT format error. Is there some special way I have to save the file and/or some editing?

Right, you have to save it as a DDS file. This will bring up a dialog, so make sure you select the DXT settings that belong to this file. (uh, I don't know what they are off hand).

I tryied saving it as all the types of DXT listed in Photoshop, but it gives me different DXT Errors every time. If I save it as either DXT 1 (there are 2) then it gives me "must be a DXT". If I save it as a DXT 3, it gives me "must be DXT 2 or DXT 3". If I save it as a DXT 5, it gives me "must be DXT 4 or DXT 5". There are no DXT 2 or DXT 4 save options in Photoshop. Could someone plz tell me what format it has to be in to Properly inject?

Try all the other ones, like 8:8:8 ARGB or whatever, I don't know if its possible though becuase i've never seen one skin with custom bumps, but the halo 3 Master chief has custom bumps so ask the author of those maybe

DotHalo has a bug that says i the error whatever DXT you're importing. Look above the texture preview for the real DXT type.

I Just used ADI. ADI can save a bitmap of any kind (execpt in the shared.map) and reinject it into another map. My version of ADI does not handle bitm(s) in the shared.map properly so I am going to look for an upgraded version. Thanks for the input guys. Hopefully I will figure out the proper way to save them some day.

P.S. I was not trying to inject the BumpMaps using DotHalo after a while. I decided to try Entity and that did not go over so well so I used ADI and transfered the BumpMap into a map I am working on. And if you go look in the Halo 2 Skins section there is a Flame Vinyl Hog that has custom BumpMaps. :D
