but when the cheif reloads the needler normally, it looks more like he's putting the crystal in between the top and bottom part, like he's putting it into the handle.

I cna answer both...
A. Caused by the refraction of light by molecules in the air.
B. My assumption would be that it takes the hardened needler pod, superheats it with a blast of a power, uses a gravity engine to force the needles up the needler slots, and lets them flash cool.
