Request for more moderators or to bring back the Arbiters

Is somebody flaming or causing problems? Is there a post that is too large for content? Moderators will check here often to discover problems quickly.

I think this site just needs to get its focus back.

I looked closely at what happens here before setting up my site, I do all
the things that were said to be a bad idea here, and its working out just
fine. We dont have arbiters, just mods and admin. Moderators are
appointed based on their attitude and activity. At first they are appointed
to only watch over forums they have a specific interest in.
The more active they become, the more forums thay have control over.
As their activity decreases again over time, they lose some forum control
to newer more active mods.

Any accounts that have not been logged onto in 60 days are purged. I
dont have any kind of site marketing that would require 20,000 users.
I dont care that the deadwood purge drops the membership to 300, as I
know I actually have 300 active modders. Quality over quantity every
time. The website where people can download everything without
registering gets thousands of hits a day, I dont really want all those
people coming into the forums too. the forums are for active modders to
gain knowledge to add to making the next mod.

Offtopic forums are strictly controlled, there's one for general chat and
one for artwork and graphics, thats it.Theres no strike system, flaming
and spam are not tolerated at all, and the banhammer is freely used.

I know my site is tiny compared to HM, but at least if you purged all the
dead accounts you would know what size membership you are really
dealing with, and how many staff you actually need. I think it would be a
start, rather than just throwing more "members with badges" into the mix.

DECOY I must say you have the bright idea. That's exactly what the staff has been focusing on lately. Dont worry everyone, answers will come soon.

I don't see what a mass account purge would get you.. You'd be running the same queries in the process of deciding who to purge that you'd need to generate some pretty statistics. I don't think the space they'd free up from the database would be that consequential.

the point is if you know how many people you have here that still go here you can decide how many stafff members you need to run the site.

Well if you dont delete them and reveal the true community size, at least run the queries so that you have a more realistic active user count.

It helps to know if you are dealing with 50 or 1500 active members when looking at how many staff to put on the forums.

My question would be how to determine if someone is "active". There are many users that deserve a spot here whether or not they've been around lately and you would need to take that into consideration as well.

Very true.

I dont know how much access there is to the actual tables for HM, but I
exclude members of a certain rank or usergroup (e.g. admin or elites)
from the account purge. It's not a huge group, its recognition of past
achievement or in HPC's case, getting the site started. (we dont have much of a past yet...)

Sort of a jump from visa to citizenship.....

Purging wouldn't really work for HM, since users may return after a year when a mod is linked from some other site, and want to comment on it...Thats the niche that HM has...Other sites can't really grow to the size of HM, so they find their niche (like yours clearly has)...

I have some rough estimates of the user base, reports made, etc. given to some JA/admins...They somewhat point out (imho) we already have too much administrative (all levels) staff, so they ignored it (imho)...Bring on the arbiters...

If there were more problems involved with adding more staff, I'd be more cautious. But there isn't, so I don't see any harm in trying. If it doesn't work out, so be it. Not a problem.

And yeah DECOY... I'm not entirely sure what the point of purging users. It's not like each user takes up very much size (less than a KB) and no harm to the site is going to occur. Yes, if you want to see the actual active userbase, yes, that would be a good thing I suppose. But the point? No real point. You just see a number that doesn't really change anything. You say it'll help us choose the number of staff better. Does it? Just put a few mods out. If they can't handle it, add more. If they can't, add more.

Like Iron_Forge said, if someone leaves for bit not knowing if they're going to return, it's nice to know your account is still here when you get back.

I'm out of time here, I'd say more but I have to go.

Read what I said before that a few times and you'll understand. Or just read that 5 times or so. It makes sense.

Halomods is fine as it is, I don't get it, no changes are needed. If people make false reports, just ban them... Simple.

Anyway, so.... what's going to happen? Is this discussion going to go on? If so, I might aswell cook some Sushi for Xero.
