Hey i have to agree with some of the other poeple that this model is pritty darn good for a first timer.
In order to decrease the amount of polygons the following should be observed:
1: The barrel should only have about 6 to 8 sides.
2: Try using a shader to add the affect of raised sections. Halo 2 uses this style of modeling as does UT 2004 and the HALO 2 CE team, and it can be implemented into halo with a simple bump map.
