Render Gallery Submission Thread (Updated 8-13) 56k warning
Congratulations on your third place ross.
But i must say i dont agree with it. You have to admit that the piece you submitted is not all our work. The amount of effort it would have taken to actually custom model all the things in your scene AND texture them is infinitely larger than setting up that scene and rendering. It seems there has been a misunderstanding there, as it seems the judges think you did both. Is the mc bump even your own? Im not purposely having a go at you, but it seems like a pretty cheap win considering you are in effect stealing others work (i doubt you have the express permission to use those models) I think any ripped content shouldnt have been allowed (yours too veegie, even if you have permission, its still not all your work) but i dont think the judges are too aware of halomods..
That said, i had to admit there is a big difference between the render veegie showed and ross's entry. Ill have to side with veegie there, as the scene is very well set up in terms of the look of the materials, and the lighting work is a lot better too. Im not going to comment on the environment since i dont know if its custom or not, but if it is, further kudos.
Im not bitching about not winning btw, my piece was utter garbage

i've put around 13 months into everything you saw there. the models themselves and many textures were taken from the game. I hope you understand just how much work really was done on this piece. Months of just "tweaking" certain things make a huge difference. I am using jean-luc's (halo 2 rules) bump map on the mc. This is far more complex than merely "placing models". I did not hide anything when i submitted this either. In the email that contained my submission, i made sure they knew how i made it.
as far as it being others' work, the judges specifically said that one may use others' pieces of work to make your art as long as you give it a unique spin. I know the render doesn't exactly make sense, and i'd love to be able to do a city scene, but i don't have the skill to do anything like that yet, and i don't claim to either. I do have a nice earth, capital ship, and mc, so i need to work with what i've got at my disposal. i learned everthing i know about 3ds-max just with these halo 2 renders.
i hope i haven't come on too strongly, i didn't mean to upset veegie, and i hope he knows that the judges do not believe that this is all me in any way.
here's my updated elite by the way, it's using jean-luc's bump maps now. I still can't figure out how to do that chest illumination with the green symbols yet though. any advice would be nice.

For the illumination you could use a mask and the self illumination map, or just use the video post effects glow (in the environment/effects)
But cmon, 13 months on those models? what have you been doing? It takes a few hours to rig it (i presume its your rig) You could get good materials set up with all your falloff masks and reflections set up pretty quick (a few days tops) , and you can tweak all you like, but you can only go so far. The bump isnt even yours, and that can admittedly take a while to get right since its partly custom. If cubemaps are your thing (not me) then they take a few more days tops. You may spend months playing about and tweaking, but the main bulk of the work is done within a relatively short space of time.
Im bitching too much though, good job on the render as it is, but id definitely recommend a better context. Have a real battle scene going on with what youve got there, that would be cool.

personaly i like both veegies render and rosses render yet i think ross render looks more unique has more action in over all more artistic.
Veegie may be good at renders and maybe one of the best here
But hes just one person out of something like 4.8 billion humans on this planet there are bound to people better but there will always be people worse a fact of life is no one is perfect there will always be people better at somthing than you....
So dont get on the high horse saying this and that cos theres going to be somone else whos going to blow u off ur feet some day it is a hobby not a job/competition/fight to the death sort of thing.
Sorry if i dragged on but im sick and tired of people trying to be superior to everyone else no names mentioned i know alot of people like it.
BUT what has a beginning also has a end remember that you may be the best at somthing but that status has to end some time and every one is a animal remember.
back on topic nice renders i like both of the renders ive seen so far.

I prefer the Ross render...
And i think Veegie your render is too dark and textures are too "pixelised"
if you understand what i am tying to tell...
And i didn't know there was a artwork contest on bungie forums so i didn't posted my first render!

The next time Rossgemuend tell in this forum if there's a art contest please!

Commenting on this --->http://veegie.yayap.com/Ambuscade.jpg
It is good... But, it seems a bit pixelly/jagged around the area of the Elites... but this is prob. because of the compression
Other than that, the only other thing that would need some slight improving on would be the lighting...or something to do with the light can't really put my finger on...
Meh...Good Job Though
