exceptions?

hey im new to modding, and i just did my first mod. i changed the zoom levels of the pistol and it worked. then i went further, and edited the plasma rifle. i raised the rate of fire. it worked. i made the min and max spread to 0. it worked. then i tried to give it a zoom level. and.. you guessed it: EXCEPTION!! i went and tried to take away the zooming and i still got exceptions.... im always getting exceptions on random mods and sometimes my mod will work and sometimes i get an exception. (when i get an exception it will never work again, i made several copies of bloodgulch to be safe though). Please help! is there any way to prevent exceptions from happening? are there certain mods that dont work as well? help would greatly be appreciated.

Well first off, glad your thinking but, you really don't have to make so many Backups. Extracting the meta of the same thing(weapon, projectile, whatever) and then injecting it into the old Efed up tag, thus replacing the modded one, should replace all your errors and you can start off fresh with that weapons again without the hazard of replacing your old work. As for the exceptions, make sure your modding the right thing, and mixing corresponding offsets, or you'll die and get exceptions.
