here's my little written bumpmap tutorial, everyone seems to be having trouble so here it is.
Once extracted from ch2r, open them with photoshop. if it gives you an error before you open it, tell me and i'll give you the correct plugins. it should ask you if you want to use mipmaps, in which you should select no. if it gives you an error after that, it's because you extracted the bumpmap from the wrong map (for example: elite bitmaps are in mainmenu.map). also, make sure you are only using the bitmaps with the .0.0.dds extentions, these are the highest resolution. when photoshop opens the bumpmap, you should see nothing but black. hit ctrl+4 to view the alpha channel, then hit ctrl+a to select all. then hit ctrl+c to copy. hit ctrl+~ to select the rgb channel again (still black) and hit ctrl+v to paste. then hit ctrl+shift+e to merge the layers. next, hit ctrl+alt+i and rezize the image to 1024x1024. hit ctrl+shift+s to save as and make sure it is saved as a .dds file. i usually make it filename.1.0.dds (example: masterchief.0.0.dds -> masterchief.1.0.dds). it should then bring up a new save window and you'll want to make it a dxt1 image and select the option to not generate mipmaps. use this setting for all bump maps, and dxt3 for all others. dxt3 preserves the alpha map which is used as the specular level by the game. i do not use the normal map maker that platt uses because it reduces quality and doesn't offer any advantages. also, the only character you should use the active camo bump on is the masterchief (it's the best). to apply the bump map in 3dsmax, select the maps rollout from the material editor and click the bump button. then select bitmap and find the bumpmap you just created. once selected, go to the output rollout at the bottom and make the image inverted. also, use the bump amount setting to change the intenstity. that's it! note: all textures should be imported to photoshop and resized and resaved before used in 3dsmax.

correct .dds plugin
