Linux

Post by Maceber »

Well, I want to get into programming and such, and I recently went to an excellent site about programming. It demonstrates that using a windows system or windows XP (what I have now) is like trying to dance while wearing a body cast. So I am committed to getting a Linux OS.

One slight problem, my mother won't let me. She spoke to a guy from Radioshack and the guy says that it will not let me install Linux while still having a functioning windows OS operable on this computer.

Yet, the site and various other site(S) including linux's own home site state that you can run linux or unix or whatever off of a disc, like a 'live disc'. My mom will not permit me to download Linux, nor buy it from a store.

So, I am asking you guys, what type of linux should I get, will it work off of a CD, and can I run it while leaving my windows OS intact and installed on my Hard drive?

I would like the linus to have a high number of available languages on if possible.

Knoppix is the best Live CD kernel, just download it, burn the .ISO to a CD and pop it in the drive, and if it helps your mom not worry, the OS runs completely off the CD and even if you tried to it's designed so it won't put ANYTHING on your hard drive (unless of course you want it to in which case you can edit some stuff, but it's not like your going to do that on accident), if you have enough memory (I think about 600mb, so you'll want a gig) you can even use the command ramdump which will dump the entire OS into RAM, which will free up your CD drive, there are many versions, my two favorite ones being the original Knoppix, and Knoppix STD (every hacker tool under the sun  ), just google Knoppix for more info. There aren't a great deal of development tools on the Knoppix disc, however you could just download some, then run them off your hard drive once you've booted to Linux.
Good luck.

Alright, thanks! What do you mean about there not being dev tools? I would like to use it for stuff like programming and junk so does that mean there won't be programming utilites on it?

by hacker tool you mean cracking into other peoples computers right? Well, this guy says hacking is building programs, and cracking is breaking into stuff... I'm getting into just applilcation building and stuff, so whatever.

Don't worry about the URL it's not what you think it is. [/list]

Well there are a few programming tools on the disc (I think there's a Python tool, and some others) but for the most part not made for development, however, from Knoppix you can access your hard drive, so you could just download some linux development tools while in windows, then use them in linux, although you might have trouble saving projects. You can turn on write access from the root user in Knoppix, which won't install or delete anything, but you would be able to save files to your hard drive and download them too. And as for Knoppix STD, it's got encryption tools, airsnort (great tool for laptops, it breaks wireless access points, although it takes time if there aren't many users), and alot of other stuff. I would suggest first making a Knoppix disc and exploring, it's not going to hurt anything.

Shrike, Red Hat's 9th Linux Kernel, can be installed with a dual-boot scheme if you know what you're doing. The Radioshack guy meant to say that if you aren't careful, a lot of Linux Kernels will just overwrite XP without a second thought.

I agree with Hushed, if you just want to go with a CD-boot, get Knoppix. I have it on a CD, and it's pretty awesome.

Sorry if this is a bump but I have one more question. My mom got an email back from our aunt, and she says you can't save any of your work on linux! Is this true?

Nope, I don't know where she got that idea. Although in Knoppix you will have to change some setting in order to allow write access.
