No no no, I NEED to unrar the files. Thats my problem here. Not the fact that I cant apply them, just that I need the .rar files unrared.

This looks like a good place to ask...

Why does everyone here use .rar files? I just don't get it. It's not a VERY common archive format. I mean, I had WinRAR before I ever came here, but it stumps lots of people. What's wrong with .zip?

Because people are messed up. I agree. Zip is much, much easier. And you don't have to DL WinRar or anything, and it is already programmed into Windows.

i think its because .rar files are more compressed and take up less disk space

Yeah, I've used WinZip all my life and prefer it. I have to say it's not too hard for the two to coexist though, so I have no problems with people putting things in RAR format.

WinRAR uses a far better compression algorithm than normal ZIP does. WinRAR also has extended features and options that are not available when creating a ZIP archive. WinRAR also supports extraction of MANY MANY MANY formats, whereas WinZIP [IIRC] (only supports itself and a few other well known formats like .cab and such).

Also most people's computers do NOT come with ZIP software at all; [IIRC again] only Windows 2k/XP have builtin support for extracting ZIP archives, that leaves alot of users that had to download a compression program anyway. The fact that they chose to download and use WinZIP over WinRAR is just a matter of who they talked to. If you goto the sites and compare the features between the two, you'll see there's no reason everyone shouldn't be using WinRAR for practically all of their compression needs (except .ACE :P).
