My First Model
Well, he used spline and extrude, I surface spline cages to do mine, its the way I got taught.
I just used that technique in my tutorials because its easier to understand you and can make a model in like a minute so it wouldnt extend the tutorial time. But with it you can make a bad geometry base model if you wanted.

Modeling is spelt m-o-d-e-l-i-n-g .
Looks nice, but boolean is not really a good tool to use for modeling. If you use it exclusively it will make modeling take all that much longer.
Some tricks, if you boolean a hole in something, you can delete the faces facing outward from the hole, and it won't just cut away the spot within the box's frame. It will create vertices in place, but leave a nice clean surface for you to extrude or build from. It doesn't always work, but it is great for making holes in stuff.
Another tool I find useful is cut. Everything you will ever need for making the model is located under the convert to mesh category.
I don't realy know what editable patch, poly, and nurbs are for though. I find it easier to just stick with mesh.

Good bye.
