WIP - Church
WIP - Church
Work has begun on my second map, Church, and unlike my first map, Siege (click on my sig for more details), I'll be letting you see its development all the way through. Also unlike Siege, which was a collection ideas worked on as I made the map, Church has been completely designed before doing any HEK work. So it should take a lot less time to do.
Anyway, onto the details...
- The map takes place completely indoors, though you will able to break windows and view outside.
- The map has three levels: the ground floor, a balcony running all the way around the large central room and a cellar/basement.
- There is a flag room for each team, though these will not be identical, since the map is not symmetrical.
- Where Siege was designed for 8-16 players and didn't really work with any less than that, this map will be small enough for 2 players, yet intricate enough to sustain a hectic 16 player game.
- I'll be using 100% new textures and also bump mapping pretty much everything.
- There will be flickering dynamic lights in the form of torches/lamps. Just how effective I can make these remains to be seen.
- Attempts will be made to create specular effects similiar to those in Half Life 2, where surfaces accurately reflect their surroundings. It'll involve a lot of new cube maps, but I know Halo can do it; it's just a question of how fast.
Here's the first pic so far, taken after about an hours work. No attempt at texture mapping has been made and the roof is not present yet. The MC is standing behind the prototype of a long church pew. There will be several of these at this end of the map.

Windows in the ceiling are a possibility, but I'll have to see how fast it runs before adding in extra stuff. There will be a huge stained glass window on the far wall, however. The sky is only temporary; I'm planning on making it at night, with the interior dark, dingy and dimly lit by flickering torches.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I'm not out to offend anyone by setting this in a church. I just believe that from an architectural point of view this will make an interesting, fun map. Also, I'll be able to use a low number of polygons with a high number of exact portals, making my ambitions for the lighting and specular effects realistic.theguy2042000 wrote:im christian i wont be shooting in this church
This isn't the first map to be set in or include a church in it. It certainly won't be the last either, because these a grand, beautiful builidings that offer numerous possibilities for map making while still looking distinctive.

I think you've got a pretty cool concept going there. I'm a Christian, and like has been said its a building designed for a level, plus its a video game. From a moral standpoint you shouldn't kill be inside, or outside a church, so something is a little off.
Are you working on the textures more? The wood panelling seems a little out of place. (Not being critical, it's better than I can do. )

i belive they are just temporary textures cuz knowing him for what his textures were like in siege they won't ever stay that way lolErmac wrote:I think you've got a pretty cool concept going there. Yup. As I said in the first post, that pic was taken after 1 hours work, with no attempt at texturing at all (I just covered it in the metal panel texture from the HEK and left it how it came out). Texturing won't come until I'm happy with geometry, though I may quickly put in some temporary ones for futures screenshots to show you better distinction between the different parts of the map.hotmonkeylicker wrote:i belive they are just temporary textures cuz knowing him for what his textures were like in siege they won't ever stay that way lolErmac wrote:I think you've got a pretty cool concept going there.
