How to make your own bad graphics skins

Post by SCORPION-396 »

OK people, here goes my first tutorial. Ok tin this tutorial I will be teaching you how to make skins to bypass bad graphics with the power of skinning. I created a method of doing this during the time when I had bad graphics. I will be using a Mac to do it today, but I will give PC instructions. If the steps have PC- before them they are only for pc, if the steps have Mac- before them they are only for Mac. If they do not have PC- or Mac- then they are for both systems. I am not very good at explaining things sometimes so ask me if something does not make sense.

Tools needed:
HMT Mac or PC
DTXT BMP (PC)
Microsoft Paint (PC)
Photoshop (Mac or PC)

1. Open HMT
2. Load the map where the skin you want is located
3. Extract the skin of what you want & it’s multipurpose. We will be using the Master Chief skin
4. PC-Now, using DXT BMP open the texture & then export it to paint by double clicking on the texture.
5. PC-Export the skin from paint to your desktop or anywhere you like. I recommend using .tiff or .png as the quality will be preserved.
6. PC-Then repeat steps 4 & 5 for the multipurpose skin.
7. Mac- Take a screen shot like the one below of the multi.
Unfortunately if you are using a Mac you will not be able to use the multipurpose very well if it is a DXT 3 or 5 & only the parts that will have color enabled in game will be the only thing visible. Example: Cyborg multi.

8. Ok so lets see what we have got, Cyborg skin & multi & the visor cubemap

9. Now open up Photoshop
10. Open the textures you extracted.
Image
11. Mac- Now in Photoshop open the screenshot you took earlier & crop it.
Image
12. Now desatureate the multipurpose
13. Now go to the Select option at top & choose all
Image
14. Now copy & paste it to the normal texture
15. Duplicate the background layer
16. Move the duplicated layer above the desatureated multi layer.
17. Now turn off the layer you just moved.
18. Now jack the contrast of the desatureated multi layer to +35 (or what ever you feel comfortable with)
Image
19. Now turn the top layer back on & reduce the opacity to 55% (or what ever you feel comfortable with)
Image
20. Now you can fuse the layers together
Image
21. Repeat step 15
22. Cut out the visor area on the copy layer as shown below & delete
Image
23. OK now paste the gold visor texture on top of the two layers & move it to the one you cut out.
24. No free transform it to fit the area of the visor.
Image
25. Now move the layer between the two below it.
26. Now select the top layer & erase any remaining black from when you cut the shape out.
27. By now you should have something like this
Image
28. Now you can fuse the layers & save it as a .tiff or a .png, but DO NOT close it yet.
29. Put it in to the game (assuming you know how)
30.Test it in-game
31. Then if you are not satisfied with the visor area, go back into Photoshop & undo the merge you made before & edit it as you wish. You can also use the blur tool to customize to your liking.
You can also become creative with this & even add more steps & techniques of your own.
