SKINNING WITH WINGS 3D/ death of flatmapping!!!

with help from jsk

to get your models ingame use jsk's model injecting tutorial

PROTIP:I found out how to do this by experimenting, don't be afraid to go off the beaten trail

in this tut all you need to know is how to make a model(idc what it is), combine all the objects you used to make the model, and have a right clicking mouse ;D

make your model, im using my SMG model, because i don't want to make a new one for a tutorial

if you have various objects they have to be combined for it to work

pic:
Image
ok highlight the model(it should now be in red)

right-click, and scroll down to UV mapping

choose Direct if this is your first UV map
choose Force Segment(keep previous) if you've already uv mapped the object before, and don't want to delete your old bitmap
choose Force Segment(delete previous) if you want to delete your old bitmap and make a new onee

I chose Direct, since i've never UV mapped this before

a new window should pop-up called "AutoUV Segmenting:(object name here)"

highlight every face on the object in that window

right click, and you get this window
Image
got down to segment by and choose Projection, or Feature Detection. I myself prefer Projection

your model should now be done up in many colors
Image
right click again, and choose CONTINUE>

you get many choices, the best are Projection Normal and Unfolding
Image
I prefer Projection Normal

a new window should appear when you decide which one to click, it should be entitled "AutoUV"

in the new window all of the faces are laid out, just waiting to be made into a texture, all the faces should be highlighted, so deselect everything and now right click again, the "Create Texture" option pops up

click it!!!!

for most skins the dimensions have to be 512x512
my settings(most of the time)
Image
viola a texture!
now go back to the Geometry window, go to the top, and choose Window>Outliner

choose the texture you made, right click, and choose make external

idc what you name it or where you save it. JUST SAVE IT SOMEWHERE WHERE IT WON'T GET LOST

now, skin the texture with any app

Back to Wings: go to file>import image and choose the skin, and re-open the UV editor window

IF YOU CLOSED WINGS, HIGHLIGHT THE MODEL, GO TO WINDOW>UV EDITOR WINDOW

now, re-open the outliner window, and you should see the old skin, and the new one, drag the new one onto the UV editor Window, and it should replace itself

im not exactly the best skinner, and it takes me a while on the skins, so im just gonna show you a picture of my katana

to show what it can do
Image

once you get it inagme don't modify the final texture.

have fun

if there's any problems(pictures now working etc.)pm me or contact me through AIM

blarg, i injected it ingame, but i forgot to scale, well w/e it's my bed time so pic anyways

UBER BIG SWORD PICTURE:
Image
:oops:messed up forgot to scale, and stray vert, but I had to go to bed

as you can see it still has the original multipurpose skin, you can edit that to make it fit the new model

No, it's for Halo Mac, which he even put in the topic description, unless Wings 3D suddenly became avaliable for PC? Also I'm pretty sure you can "UV" on gmax but when I re-download gmax, i'll find out.

EDIT: Yeah you can make textures like that on gmax, I suggest looking around in the CE tutorial sections though, i'm sure you'll find one there.

Anyways nice tutorial Lambda, you make it look like its easy to re-model (now i feel like buying a mac).
