[Halo 2] How to give custom skins cutom textures.

Post by kornkidcrazy »

Ok. This is a tutorial on how to take textures off of custom skins. This is extremly handy if you are skining metals and you don't want the metals to look metalic or have lines in them any more. Normally, when you skin with Dothalo, you go to the bitmap tag, find what you want to skin, skin it, and inject it back into the game. But, here is where the problem begins. Let the tutorial begin.

What You Need!
Insolence
Dothalo
Any Program That Lets You Skin .dds Files
And This Tutorial

In this tutorial, I will be using Coagulation, as a deminstration. This is what the bitmap scenarios\bitmaps\solo\alphagasgiant\metals\panel_d looks like before it is skinned:

Now, in photoshop, I reskined panel d to look like dark brown sand. This is how it turned out:

When I inject this bitmap back into Dothalo, it looks just like how did in photoshop. But, in game, the skin still has the metal textures, making it look somewhat like this:

I don't have any way to take an actual screen shot in game, so this picture was made on my computer, but the bitmap would look like that, only the lines from the metal would be more visable. So, now it is time to get rid of this problem. Let's begin.

Step #1 Adding Stuff!
Okay. This is when we need Insolence. So, open up Insolence and the map that your modding. Go to the bitmap tag, and find any of the following bitmaps:
scenarios\bitmaps\detail_maps\nature\grass\lush
scenarios\bitmaps\detail_maps\nature\ground\dirt_pebble
scenarios\bitmaps\detail_maps\nature\grass\lush
scenarios\bitmaps\multi\halo\coagulation\coag_grass
Basicly, any grass or sand texture. Once you find one, duplicate it in Insolence, then rename it anythign you want. Now, the reason why we did this is because none of these bitmaps have any textures once they are reskined. So, now go to the shade tag. Duplicate any shader, but I would recomend one for grass, cliffs, rocks, trees, or sand. Rename this shader anything you want as well. Now, we are done with Insolence.

Step 2 New Skins!
Open up Dothalo, and extract your new bitmap. Then, edit it to your likings in a program that can edit .dds files like I did here:
Image
Okay, now save your new skin, and inject it into Dothalo, replacing your new bitmap you made in Insolence. Now, you are done with skinning.

Step 3 Mix and Match!
Now here is the long part. Find your new shader and click on the go to tag button located on the dependancies window in Dothalo. Now, a bitmap tag and some other tag will pop up in the dependancies window. Swap the bitmap tag with the new bitmap you made. Now, there is one more thing we must do. Go down to the sbsp tag and click on the map's bsp. Tis will take a while to load, but just wait. Now, find the shader to the metal or whatever that you want to replace with your custom shader. For me, I would find panel d. Now, for all of the panel d (or whatever your doing) shaders, swap them with your new shader you made in Insolence. Now, save all of your changes, sign the map, and ftp the map to your xbox. Now, in the game, where ever panel d was is now where my new bitmap is and this bitmap doesn't have that metal texture in it. Thanks for reading this tutorial.
