Gears of War: Worth the Hype?

Hello all. I know gears has been out for a while and so now I think it's the time that this is adressed.

Do you think that GOW was over hyped? Do you think it really is "the halo killer"? Do you even like the game?

I personally don't feel that it deserved all the hype it got, nor the attention that it has now. GOW is a game that would be great to play maybe three matches a day and that's it, whereas with Halo 2 you could easily play for days straight.

The main problem with Gears is the lack of options. There is like what... 2..3 gametypes? And they are all basically Slayer varients? Sure they each have their own settings to change, but at the end of the day, they're still basically slayer.

Every game ends up playing out the same almost. Like, lets say on Gridlock for example. Every game someone rushes boomshot, someone rushes sniper, someone rushes mines. Usually it's the same people who rush those places, and usually they get to the same point at the same time as the guy on the other team who's doing the same exact thing!

Sure you may be thinking "Well same thing in Halo 2, but for some reason in Halo 2 it doesn't get boring rushing the snipe at the beginning of the match". Halo 2's spawns are randomish. Spawning in the same exact spot for several rounds in a row just takes away from the replay value to me.

I dunno. I rented the game because of what everyone was saying about it, and I don't feel that it lived up to the hype that it created.

I love Gears multiplayer because it is perfectly balanced. No weapon stands out over any other.

Gears is one of my favorite games to come out, but I dont think it is a Halo killer.

Its not a halo series killer by far. But it is a huge smack in the face to the PS3. It is the greatest 360 game yet though. I'm still hooked.

I like how intense the action can get, Being flanked, Having to flank a troidka (if thats how you spell it) The chain saw bayonet was a nice touch.

If you want a more real game play i guess GOW is the choice but IMO its combat system and gameplay IS a bit better than halo but we will have to wait for halo 3 to say that wont we?

Gears of War is not a Halo killer because it's nothing like Halo. You could also say that Halo is not a Gears of War killer; apples and oranges.
Gears is a third person tactical stop-and-pop shooter whereas Halo is a first person guns-blazin' type of game. They're both great in their own different ways. I personally feel that Gears has lived up to the hype and more, it's a fantastic game; just don't try to compare it to something it's not.

Theres features you can compare, It can be a halo killer if you choose to play it before halo though ;).

GoW is really pwnage but people who says it beats halo are totally wrong (except in grafix and some)cuz when it's about gameplay it's defenitly a WHOLE other type of game and by the way GoW is a next-gen game so thats another reason for not comparing them if you do compare it you should compare it with halo3

Or you could, you know, listen to THC and not compare it to Halo at all...

But you can't just say GoW>Halo or vice versa. Each one is better in their own way. If you're just pissed off and feel like killing stuff, I would choose Halo; But if you're in the mood for a tactical fight, and in the need to use your head a bit more, GoW is where it's at.

Yes the tactical element in GoW is amazing, and it works.

By it works I mean that if you flank someone, they don't turn around and shoot your face off, well sometimes they do.

*Hijacking Topic*

But playing gears then halo has made me wonder what gears would be like as a FPS, but when using the cover you wouldn't go third person, but stay in Fp and stay in FP all the time even when rolling and chainsawing and getting chainsawed. I think it would work if you could look down and see your legs and everything else that your head should be able to see. I think it would be a really intense game. What do you guys think?

I think it would be an interesting concept, but it wouldn't be the same.

I thought about getting it but I think it doesn't look all that great. I mean, don't get me wrong, it looks fun, but it didn't look that fun. Another thing that turned me off was the rediculous amount of gore. It reminded me of Quake 4 (and probably Doom which I haven't played except the very first one) where when someone dies 100 gallons of blood spews everywhere, and then chainsaws and rusty sawblades hack off limbs and etc etc. I mean, realistic blood and such makes a game much more enjoyable (such as in counter-strike and Halo) but I thought it was stupid. This is just what I think so don't get pissed.

The blood is a realistic amount. You think when a bullet hits you'll bleed like you pricked your finger? Heck no, blood goes flying everywhere, plus the blood lets you know if you hit someone.

But its really fun.

well , i havent played it yet but i heard the story mode isnt very long, and i dont think its lived up to the hype, i would probably maybe beat the story mode and maybe play a couple of online matches, ( i heard there isnt much variety in the mulitplayer) then id probably stop playing, just my opinion of what i might do with the game

Actually you would be hooked until halo 3.

Meh, I'm not one of those people who are hooked on it. It doesn't have that....addicting quality to it that Halo does. In fact, Halo is probably the only game that I've been addicted to.

well that makes you one of few who arent hooked on it.. even noobs that cant even kill anyone are on xblive ruining ranked games, but they still are hooked :P (no offense to any noobs)
