Computers

Post by shadowkhas »

Talk about building computers, or choosing what computer you want for yourself.
Sometimes it fluctuates where it's allowed; here in the Cafe, or Tech Questions. Here'll be the official thread for that kind of stuff from now on.
So shall it be written.

Continue the current computer discussion from the Rant Thread here, too.

Good thread.

Right so, I know nothing about computers. I know mine sucks, and I want one that doesn't suck. Looking for a desktop, as this is the home/family machine. This one is like 6 years old, and can't even run source or 1.6 on the lowest settings. Photoshop/3DS is getting increasingly hard to use as this thing continues to die. I don't play games for the most part, so I wouldn't worry about how well crysis will play.

tldr; Want to play css, handle 3DS/PS, price range is ~ $1000.

Go.
Just not removing this.

I just looked around and grabbed some stuff...
I focused more on CPU and RAM...Core i7 will fit into your budget, so even with the lowest one available, you'll still feel an obvious improvement. Plus, if Photoshop/3D stuff is what you're going to be doing for the foreseeable time, it should even last you quite a bit. Plus, having a Core i7 compatible board, you'll be able to upgrade later to something higher later on if need be.
Motherboard
RAM
CPU
Power Supply
Graphics Card
Hard Drive
DVD Drive
------------------
With both drives: $940.93
Without: $834.95

I figure the HD and DVD drive are optional, I mean, extra storage can't hurt, and it isn't too costly now, but if you're still happy with your current... And the optical drive you can probably just take out of your old computer.
I'm also assuming with this list that you can reuse the case.

Ah. Not sure if the case could be reusable, but the HD and DVD drive should work.

In that case, you could go for this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811233033
Does the job. It's a case. Nothing else to really say, unless you want a specific style.

If you're on a budget and don't want some e-peen glowy "Gaming" case, just get one from some small business or from a school PC yard. they're always tossing old boxes for newer ones and they're free.

The 4870 has half the memory the GTX280 has. (512MB vs. 1GB)
It also has a slightly higher memory clock speed then the 4870.

Go with this unless you looking for a laptop.
Though you will never find a laptop this good for this price.

Thats enough of that, take it to PMs. It seems only you two are the only ones passionate enough to clash on which graphics card is better by little stacks of technicalities.
K it's finished, we discussed via AIM.

HP Pavilion dv5t series

I cannot speak for the quality of Asus but I can definitely say that HP is a good choice for quality and longevity.
My mom bought an HP pavilion back in '02 I believe and it still works perfectly well after being dropped twice, traveling around the world, going on monthly trips for the last few years, and using intensive programs daily for her work.
But of course the battery life is mere 20 minutes, as is to be expected of any laptop battery that has been in use for so long.

well, i do know that ASUS has been making motherboards for a while now, and i know that HP lasts long, but with statistics, the ASUS seriously pwnt's that HP, that laptop almost beats my desktop computer (excedes in everything except CPU), plus i think a local store can order one for me. so all in all, i like the ASUS better :T

Frankly...why not. Tech Questions and the like is rarely checked by a lot of people.

The Google brought this up in regards to your question: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows- ... sta-or-xp/

The Flickr import feature is pretty cool, too.
