I'm actually using linux right now browsing for figuring out how to use this OS lol xD. But to the point, this operating system is clean as a bar of soap, so give it a try, but you have to have a HDD petition to install the OS

I'm using Ubuntu right now, or at least, have it as a dual-boot. It's great, runs very fast, and I love the UI.

Wider range of software on Windows, as it is more widely used. Windows works fantastically for me and suits all of my needs.

I agree w/ Tural, except Vista probably does run slower.

I hate Vista. I'd take anything over Vista.

I'm not setting out to start an argument, so I'm not going into depth, which will lead to contradictions I'm too stubborn to listen to.
Long story short: XP works great, Vista "fixes" stuff that wasn't broken, annoying me.

Meh I muchly prefer Vista over XP.. it's nicer to look at, handles errors better.. and is just generally more interactive. The whole incompatibility-issues-thing is a bit of a downer though..
And I'm with going for Windows.. Linux is just meh meh..

Agreed. I run Windows XP 2005 Media Center Edition. Works amazing.

If you know how to handle a computer, you can't go wrong with Windows XP.

Yeah, but Microsoft knew that if they made a new sleek, professional-looking OS, they'd make a ton of money.

Vista != professional looking or sleek

I used it at a cafe in brazil, and was rather annoyed with it. its the little things really, and I was just running my personal portable apps usb stick with it so it was bearable... IE, I was using a bunch of 3rd party apps to do stuff..
Anyways...
I'd recommend that any newbie delve into ubuntu, really learn the OS, as well as they know any other, try some other distros out if they feel like it, and then make a decision.
Personally all my machines except my gaming machine run linux. the gaming machine runs winXP and when it retires, I'll probably convert it into a mythbox.
my 2cents...

I used to use Ubuntu on my old laptop and I loved it. Now that I have a Mac, OS X is my home away from Windows.
However, if you just want to try out linux before committing, I recommend trying
wubi. You install Ubuntu like you were installing any Windows program and it uninstalls just as easy.

I have a 'similar' story. The first time I played around with Vista was when I was round a friend's house, and I too came away with the same opinion. On actually getting a laptop with it pre-installed though I found it to be a lot different than I first thought. In my opinion now it's an excellent OS. The 'hate' probably came from the restricted environments.. I don't suppose you could do much in the way of preference changing on a computer in a cafe.. and I couldn't either as it wasn't my computer.. but when you do look through the preferences, you can turn a lot of crap off..

Not necessarily. I'm pretty sure people who design and develop OS' know what they're doing.. The only reason for them running slowly is because your computer does not meet the optimum requirements needed for the OS to function as it should.
