Sansa Shuffle Mod Recruit!

Well in short my sansa is pretty much fried as a multimedia device because the LCD got crackled-spackled. So I have this idea in my head to replace the crappy front case piece with a wooden cover, same with the middle scroll-wheel and the middle button! Woot! Now I can do that part fairly easily after looking at the inside of the sansa. My biggest problem is that now I have all these functions that I cannot easily access because I have no screen to use!

Heres where this idea of mine comes in!

I want to make it so that the "menu" button becomes a simply on/off switch, preferably with only a three second hold-time.

Once on the player automatically starts playing a random playlist of all songs stored on the main flash-memory, as well as possibly any connected MicroSD card.

I want the "center" button to become the main input button:
Quick Press -> Play if paused, if playing: skip to next "random" song.
Long Press -> Pause.

The wheel should only adjust volume levels.

Also if possible:
Hold center button + move scroll wheel to switch between EQ presets.

So as you can see I need to know if such a modification of the software/firmware is possible, then whether it is legal. and finally if anyone could either coach me through how to achieve this, or do this for me.

This would be a volunteer sort of thing just so you know. Once I get more money on my paypal account (1 month+) I could pay the developer of the firmware 25$ if they felt it necessary.

There could be something out there already like this...But this looks to be much more than any firmware modification than I've done.Your talking about adding and changing context sensitive values, not just mere swaps of: play button = fast forward.
Firmware modification isn't illegal (unless your doing it for the sole purpose of illegal activities), it just voids your warranty...

Your best bet is to either lower your expectations or search google for any homebrew firmwars (rockbox?)

Was thinking of modifying rockbox to be what I need. I just need someone to tell me where to get started (which programs I need, where to look for help, etc).
