Anything.
You can make a site on anything, whether or not it becomes popular is up to you. You'll need to provide unique content...a reason for people to come to your site. For instance, tons of people make game modding sites, but once people see that the owner is a really talented modder, they may join to download his/her mods. Owner teaches others to mod, some experienced modders see the site and figure it'd be good to go there. Site flourishes, etc.

It's all been done before. Whatever it is you're going to do, you need to provide unique content. End of story.Th2mods wrote:besides modding. like a social thing, that a larger group of people would visit{TP}Spartan wrote:start a really good modding team, get some good modders/friends to be admins, get a good background, and never stop posting
One could also have a strong community...So an appeal is being able to talk about said subject with people you like...The community aspect is probably what keeps me here so its a strong factor...
Unique content always helps too... but if the community sucks (like this site always gets accused of by people who get memories of the "good ol days") then people won't really wanna go there to talk, rather, they'll just take the content and leave.
But really, we can't tell you what the "best forum idea" is, you'd have to decide...Base it on things you like, chance are your friends and other random people have that same interest and if you make it good to go there then people will stay and word of mouth ensues.
Unless of course your wanting us to talk about the best forum for ourselves (like what we'd want) and in that case I have no clue...This is the only forum I really go to right now...or have ever really been active in.

Keep it simple. Example: this site. Do not overly complicate things, and also the colour scheme. Blue is nice. Those are two things that every other site normally fails at, what with their different shades of black skin; painful to look at skin; multiple skins; forever looping animated banners/avatars/signatures; masses of forums; and free posting of illegal things/viruses etc.
Also smilies. PHPBB wins, IPB phails. And mods too, they're kool, sometimes...

a great i dea would be music, a site where ppl can come to you when they here a song, but dont know what its called, and they can get help from other members, and also stuff about music they like, musical debates, and yeah, i founfd this one site like that and it had millions of members after its first year....ppl like sites like that, i was drawn to it...but they have it set up wierd, but if you made a good one im sure ppl would flood, cause music is something almost noone can live with out.

We
my advice would be to set up a site featuring content you're interested in, know that other people are interested in, and isn't as easily available on the internet as others.
first, find out what the site will be designed around and who'll want to go to it. if there's no target audience, people won't come. after that, like everyone else has said, good design/layout and good content will help attract and keep visitors.

ASPARTAME: in your diet soda and artificial sweeteners. also, it's obviously completely safe. it's not like it will cause tumors or anything. >.>

I just realized that something is very wrong with this topic: if you know what I'm getting at just say it...
He's asking for an idea to start up a forum. So basically he wants someone to tell him what kind of forum to start up. To me this is just wrong. You start a forum because you have something awesome that you want to share with other people.
