Video game design?

Well, it's that time in life when you choose a career.I'm a junior in high school. Right now, I'm seriously considering Video game design. Please don't post things useless or flaming comments. I just want to know if any of ya'll know some things about it. I'm just curious about colleges, and if you finish it, companies that hire such as Bungie, Epic, etc. If you get hired, do you even last long in the industy such as when you turn 40 and you lose imagination, are you pretty much forced to retire? I'm also considering hardware computer engineering but I don't know if i'm capable of it ><. I just want to know if anyone knows anything or any site that has game design processes. (Yes i've googled it, but you might know one I don't or something) and I jsut want to see what all is involved. Again please don't flame or try to "discourage" I guess. Thanks for anything

Only junior high? You've got a long ways to go before you have to make any of those decisions and chances are you'll end up changing your mind a few times between then

I knew what I wanted to do with my life when I was in 4th grade, and right now I do it without pay. Computer programming, particularly game and web design.

Well I don't think you will be "forced" to retire at a certain age, my friend's dad got offered a job at Microsoft doing something with the xbox 360, so there is at least one 40-something year old doing game design.

Well, best thing to do is study hard into the trade now so you'll already be able to do most things outside of school. From there getting hired or even starting your own design company probably wouldn't be too difficult. I'm only a sophomore, and I've considered game design. However, psychiatry is what I'm leaning into the most.

Don't think 'Game Design' is the Grail of all jobs. You will not get into a great company making great games until you get your hands dirty with horrible ones.
Don't jump in before you know what the job descriptions actually are. A lot of young kids think that 'Game Design' means you get to play Halo with Bungie.
It doesn't, and trust me, you'll probably find yourself going down a much different road than what you think you want to in two or three years.
I thought it'd be cool to go into programming. I tried a very low level introductory course to programming, and I hated it.
I can only pray that it was because it was such a low level course.

Video game design isn't sitting down and playing beta versions of games all day. It's sitting at a computer typing code. If you want to do that with your life good luck. Also without ties to a reputable company you'll end up freelancing for a while which usually causes financial problems because you're trying to pay for game projects on limited income.
My neighbor was in highschool back in the 90's and he freelanced for 4 years and now he works for Rockstar games.

It's not that broad "game designer" I want. Just more of the modeling 3d artist per say. I don't expect to sit down and beta games all day, I think of me actually sitting at a desk making high detailed levels and such. I just don't want this to be like CSI stuff. Once that show came out, EVERYONE wanted to do it, but only very large cities have one. I know a lot of kids want to be "game designers". I've tried C++ and VB. I Phaled. I just want to see what ya'll know about being a 3d Artist in game designs.

Yea you TBZ and a certain other person doing a bit of AI would be the most kickass AI ever
On-topic: Video game design isn't really a thing that just anyone can get into, and a lot of schools don't teach it. You should think about a back-up.

Well, I dunno what your chances of getting a job in the real world with these skills would be. I mean, more and more people want to get into the game design field as more of these next gen games come out. I mean, in these times games are such a popular thing, a lot of people are going to be interested on having a career involved with them. It all really depends on how well you do.

I considered video game design but I'm pretty sure I'm just going to do general programming (haven't picked any specifics yet) or a network engineer.
I hope no one minds me linking to
a game I was working on before. ;\
