heard of FON? well, check it out here.
the short of it: register with fon, buy a router, register your wifi access point, and join the free wifi communitiy.
bad thing is, routers are about $30. i believe users can email friends with links to free routers, but using it gets you tied up with fon, and it isn't really that great. personally, i think the community is slowly going to die unless they get something good going for them, even though a global network of shared wifi is a good idea.
and for those of you that are security minded, this might not be for you. essentially, the fon router accepts firmaware upgrades and commands from download.fon.com, meaning there's one point of authority. as mentioned here, this is only a matter of time until a fon-worm is set loose, harvesting fon logins.
but for those of you that see opporunity, simply send me an email at "the.zandi %{at]) gmail.com" (i put the funky at in there to keep bots from getting my email). anyways, i believe i have free wifi router passes to send out. don't know how many, but the first people to email me get first priority.
and once you get the fon router, you don't have to comply with fon to use it. this site goes over hacking the fon router, and in the minute i've taken to read the front page, it appears to give you full root on the device.
well, that's all i've got to say in the first post. i've got to take this weekend (i guess) to re-register with fon. i originally did through a promotional deal, but with a guerillamail addres, so it's all gone now. anyways, once i'm re-registered i'll see how many routers i can give away. discuss.
