Let it be heard! The intellectuals/hackers manifesto!
Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager
Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...
Damn kids. They're all alike.
But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain,
ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what
made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?
I am a hacker, enter my world...
Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of
the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...
Damn underachiever. They're all alike.
I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain
for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms.
Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."
Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.
I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is
cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I
screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me...
Or feels threatened by me...
Or thinks I'm a smart ass...
Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...
Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.
And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through
the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is
sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is
found.
"This is it... this is where I belong..."
I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to
them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...
Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...
You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at
school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip
through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or
ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will-
ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.
This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the
beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying
for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and
you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek
after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color,
without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals.
You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us
and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.
Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is
that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.
My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me
for.
I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual,
but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

HaloMod's Scapegoat
Thats really cool Jks, thanks for posting it.
You know, I always feel bad for the hackers who get caught hacking into, oh lets say, Paris Hilton's phone, or the Bank. The bank, or any other place is an unacceptable place to hack, but still, I feel bad for them sometimes. Arent we all at HM hackers anyways? Maybe legal hackers because we hack halo following the copywright laws and yadayada but still, if it were made illegal, all of you would continue modding halo, am I right?

That's why I'm glad I'm ahead in math. My teachers consider me smart enough to do things in my head.Royal wrote:Oh crap i do my work in my head and i always got in trouble with teachers.
Thanks for posting this jks. I now have it saved on my desktop >_>
Violence is not the answer, it is the question. The answer is yes.

I never once "lied" you just took what I said wrongly, my good friend from school, not from the internet, is the one that got me interested in programming and security. He is teaching me how to program and we are currently "employed" by the district network admins to test network security and such. I don't know how to program or code because I'm still learning, he is teaching me all he knows about computers, software, and network security and in return I am teaching him about theoretical physics and calculus.

HaloMod's Scapegoat
Why not? The fact remains that everyone I know in real life believes me, and if you were to meet me in real life too you would realize it as well. I don't claim to be some "all knowing god of hacking and smartness" I've come to realize that there will always be someone smarter, that goes that extra mile that I can't go, but I'm the one that has teachers coming to me and asking me how to do advanced math problems and how to make programs work and things.

HaloMod's Scapegoat
let's keep this from turning into an old-school halomods flamewar, ok? in the long run, it doesn't matter wether jks is lying or not, or whether you believe him or not, so let's all just shut the hell up about who's what and why or why not and talk about the said document jks has taken the liberty to post for us to read, enjoy, and debate.
back on topic. i agree with what the manifesto says and it's message. the media has severely skewed the average american's view of a hacker, and if you tell someone you meet on the street that your a hacker, you're going to get any range of responses, from them just looking at you weird and walking away, to them being more agressive towards you (shove you, trip you) or maybe, striking up a friendly (but most of the time not-so-friendly) conversation.
who out there agrees with the manifesto? disagrees? what have you seen on tv and the news that has influenced your view of a hacker? what is your view of a hacker?

I disagree with it.
As I said before, the author stereotypes the typical hacker, and tries to put them in good light. If you break through a websites security that's illegal. A simple analogy would be, if I get caught robbing a house, could my excuse be that I was curious how to pick a lock? Or if I kill someone, could my excuse be I wanted to see how to fire a gun?
He sounds like an elitist, belieiving he is better than most because he was born with intelligence. One such example is how he craved for knowledge, and yet the teachers were holding him back. When I'm interested in something I go and read up on it, and learn about it, not complaining that it is not taught to me.
Also, Voided, I believe that you were correct about jks. You did not know what you were talking about, and it might have been that you were misinformed by your parents and other close friends. Added to the fact that I have never met you in real life, I can make no positive conclusions if what you are saying is true or not.

But do you understand how that description of a hacker has been slanted and slandered over the years since its inception, you have no idea what it even means to be a hacker, you have never read any books about how it began, back in the 1980s at MIT. Please speak after you have informed yourself about what we do and what we are. Also, when he wrote this it was 1986, if he wanted to learn more, it would not be possible, plus the intelligent people of this world better and more powerful than others, its the very definition of the word. It is in fact you who is very, very misinformed about everything, the only people that can understand something so profound and beautiful are the true intellectuals of this world. I'm sorry to have seen the real thirst for knowledge die out over the years, the world no longer appreciates true talent and intelligence, this is most evident with these abominations called GPAs. They give you a score based on your effort towards pleasing the bosses of this society, well I say down with GPAs and grades, down with the system! We as a society have been degraded long enough, it is time for us true intellectuals, whose crime is curiosity, whose crime is knowing more than the mundanes, to take up the arms of the mind and rebel, my friend and I already have.

I'll let Voided take this one.jks wrote:But do you understand how that description of a hacker has been slanted and slandered over the years since its inception, you have no idea what it even means to be a hacker, you have never read any books about how it began, back in the 1980s at MIT. Just two things though
plus the intelligent people of this world better and more powerful than others, its the very definition of the word
What the fuck does that mean, that people who are born intelligent are better than everyone else because they were born with a gift?
And know, that is not the definition
Also,
I'm sorry to have seen the real thirst for knowledge die out over the years, the world no longer appreciates true talent and intelligence, this is most evident with these abominations called GPAs
You're exactly right, no one appreciates the intellectuals of todays world

Very true indeed. I myself put forth minimal effort, just enough to get me through high school. But if, say, someone would give me $1000 to get A's in all my classes.. sure I'd do it.jks wrote:these abominations called GPAs. You can't fight the system. Its greater then you. Seeing as how you seem to know everything in life.. This should be a simple concept to grasp.jks wrote:well I say down with GPAs and grades, down with the system!
No matter how hard you try, theres always someone higher then you in power. Getting influence from other people is a struggle when they see no need to rebel. The government keeps them happy and they see no reason to do anything. Although President Bush has angered plenty of people (like myself) with the war, all of society is being entertained with television and its hidden propaganda and whatnot.
Its amusing how most american news stations always talk about car bombings, and they always show the terrorists lying on the ground in peices covered with a cloth, but you never see the US soldiers.
You can't fight a system which has influence over all the people.
